All those horror films about swarms of insects, spiders, birds etc got it wrong. The real horror is not too much life, but too little. The Road explored that possibility, and it is beginning to look all too plausible.

The greatest cause of this collapse is the way we produce our food. The ecological implosion caused by current farming and fishing methods is happening even faster than climate breakdown: theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Here, in my view, is what needs to happen:
This is a global emergency. And with apologies to the farmers responding to these tweets, the way we treat the land and its life has to change radically, and fast. One sector's reluctance to change its practices must not override the survival of our life support systems.
We can no longer afford to let particular industrial interests - especially those of the pesticide industry - defeat the common interests of humanity.

This might be the most depressing thing I have seen this year. Jane Goodall in an advertisement for British Airways, promoting flying.
Why do people find it so hard to make the connection between what we do, and the destruction of the living world we love? @JaneGoodallInst?
Why do even highly intelligent people find it so hard to see the big picture?
Flying > #ClimateBreakdown > threatens to destroy everything Jane Goodall loves.
How much does she have to avert her eyes to, to appear in this ad?
For those of you seeking to justify this: no, there is simply no excuse for appearing in an advertisement for one of the activities pushing us fastest towards environmental catastrophe. Especially if you're supposed to be an environmentalist!

Chris Leslie + Chuka Umunna were partly responsible for Miliband’s defeat in 2015. Leslie promised to sustain Tory spending cuts for “decades ahead”. His Zero-Based Review threatened to extend them to the NHS. Labour would complete Osborne’s programme “to eradicate the deficit”.
Chuka Umunna announced Labour will be “radical in reforming our economy” in support of “a determinedly pro-business agenda”. They more or less eliminated the difference between Labour and the Tories on economic matters. I wrote about them both in 2014: monbiot.com/2014/06/10/the…

I'm in San Fran to cover two key PG&E hearings.

Today is a hearing on the utility's criminal probation, and whether PG&E should be required to inspect all 130K miles of its lines before the next wildfire season.

Tomorrow is the first major hearing in $PCG's bankruptcy docket.
"PG&E is a convicted felon and is on probation," U.S. District Judge William Alsup says in his opening remarks. "You can't send a corporation to prison, but you can put them on probation."
Alsup is reminding us of how Cal Fire found PG&E to have caused a number of the 2017 Wine Country blazes.

However, he added, "I should give credit" to PG&E for not sparking the Tubbs Fire, the 2nd most destructive in CA history.

Cal Fire made that Tubbs determination last week.

Some thoughts on the social commentary in 2015's TAG (A Thread)

I first heard about Tag in May 2018. I instantly wanted to see it. I found the first five minutes or so on @Youtube and when the occupants of the 2 buses died, I was hooked. But I couldn't find it anywhere to watch.
Thursday, a friend of mine let me know Tag had come to @netflix and I watched it as soon as I could, which was yesterday. And I absolutely loved it. I loved the #horror of the first two acts. The excessive #gore and #blood. I loved how over the top some scenes were.
When the third act came and things came together, at the time I was blown away. I adored the craziness and how it explained some of the stuff that felt too out of place before. I loved how it went from an all female cast to a mostly male cast and why. Then it happened...
