Some quick points to make before I sign off for the night about the big merger that just took place between Gantz and Lapid 1/6
It is great to see two politicians who both deeply believe that each should solely be prime minister set their egos aside and agree to a rotation, particularly since each has the precise strength that the other lacks 2/6
Gantz has the popularity that comes with being the new and exciting entrant and obviously has the security chops, but has no party apparatus and no Knesset experience. Lapid has built an impressive political organization and has experience in govt and opposition 3/6
Lapid has Knesset and ministerial experience and a large Yesh Atid network, but has a glaring lack of security chops, which Gantz of course has. This fills the biggest holes for each, and of course contrasts with Netanyahu’s history of tearing down internal rivals with gusto 4/6
But perhaps even more importantly is that the Gantz and Lapid merger has brought Ashkenazi into the fold, and unlike Gantz or Lapid, Ashkenazi is bout trusted and popular with many Likud voters. He is going to shift some of them over, and that may be the biggest factor here 5/6
Finally, Gantz and Lapid and Ashkenazi and Ya’alon in theory all have their lanes in this partnership, but it’s an awful lot of cooks in the kitchen with an awful lot of big egos. They may be able to pull off a win, but governing is likely to be messy 6/6
