92.9 has treated Atlanta United on the same exact level as the Hawks, Falcons, Braves, and college football since day one and it's gone a long way towards legitimizing Atlanta United with casual soccer fans in this city
Like, you're just as likely to tune in and randomly hear them talking about Atlanta United as you are to hear them talk about the Falcons. It sounds simple but that's huge when a soccer team is just seamlessly integrated into sports convo like they were
Of course they had a vested interest in doing so since they broadcast the team's games, but that hasn't always happened. I remember 680 had the rights to the Hawks and NEVER talked about them during their daily shows. So 92.9 totally could have just ignored ATL UTD
Again, 92.9 treated Atlanta United like it's (no pun intended) a major league soccer team and it's set the tone for how the rest of the local media covers the team. They are legit down there in COSTA RICA.
To put it in perspective, the AJC has a travelling writer covering Atlanta United. The Hawks currently do not have that. The local soccer team is currently getting more coverage than the local NBA team and again, that's 92.9 setting the tone.
That probably won't last (we've seen how this city gets when the Hawks are good) but it's still wild that this is happening in a non-Cascadia city. So yeah, as a soccer fan who remembers when ESPN showing ONE Champions League game a week was a thing, this is beyond my imagination
