These officers wrote “no” in their paperwork when asked if they used force. Despite assaulting this young man midday in front of dozens of witnesses. This is what happens when accountability is lost. When there are no consequences. Scariest part: There *still will likely be none.
And here it is. 4 days after releasing this video of officers’ brazen assault on young man: “NYPD investigators determined no misconduct was committed.” Message sent: Stalk streets in plain clothes. Beat up black men. Then lie about it. All acceptable. nydailynews.com/new-york/brook…
Chris’ attorney @mk_esq: "This kind of abuse happens all the time, we just happen to have footage in this case. A police officer’s word is given more credence in our system. So they don't bother. They knew they’d never be held accountable." She was right.

1)20% in prison have cognitive disability. Fewer than ever get education.
2)69% abuse drugs. 11% get services.
3)>1/2 mental illness. 1 in 3 get treatment.
4)7 of 10 rearrested/convicted w/n 5 yrs of release.

“Justice” failing miserably.
Things to be angrier about than Jussie:

1)U.S. is 5% of world pop. 25% of all incarcerated
2)More jailed pretrial than ALL incarcerated in India
3)Quarter of China’s pop. 1/2 million more in prison
4)Only country sentencing children to die in prison

“American Exceptionalism.”

3)>1/3 homeless after 6 mos
4)200k denied student loan (s.2001)
5)36 states ban welfare assistance
6)78% jobless in Indiana 5yrs post

System is senseless & undermines public safety.

That’s why it’s so terrifying that local news is dying. “Policymakers rely on reporters, especially local reporters, to expose loopholes, uncover wrongdoing, & catch unintended oversights.” Theyre doing this increasingly by relying on public defenders & individuals they serve.
I’m thinking about this right now bc of the one-two punch of @RachelBarkow’s book “Prisoners of Politics” & @theappeal’s necessary newsletter (really more of a primary source in its own right) by @SarahLustbader. Well into the 20th century, in Mississippi and the South, pubic hanging was how counties executed people. Hangings were often well-attended and festive events--you could expect to get nice and drunk and do some visiting. They were attended by white and Black people. (!)
Some people were bothered by it, but it was normal to watch someone die in public. Mary Gash wrote a friend about how she timed one hanging victim's death by watching his pulse in his wrist. She was that close. This was in 1832--also the earliest use of "puking" in my research.

1/ We learned about Ford and Kavanaugh today by observing their demeanor, but the structure of the hearing made it hard to get at the truth. We learned from this hearing *despite* the format, not because of it.

A real trial or evidentiary hearing would have been very different.
2/ If an experienced trial lawyer had hours to cross-examine Kavanaugh, they would have been able to pin him down. At times, Senators elicited testimony that was not credible (like his answer about “Renate Alumni”) but couldn’t follow up before he ran out the clock.
3/ Without strict time limits, a lawyer could have walked Kavanaugh through all of the entries in his calendar, as the Republican prosecutor started to do before she was cut off. The lawyer also could have walked through the allegations of the other two women who came forward.
