Things to be angrier about than Jussie:

1)20% in prison have cognitive disability. Fewer than ever get education.
2)69% abuse drugs. 11% get services.
3)>1/2 mental illness. 1 in 3 get treatment.
4)7 of 10 rearrested/convicted w/n 5 yrs of release.

“Justice” failing miserably.
Things to be angrier about than Jussie:

1)U.S. is 5% of world pop. 25% of all incarcerated
2)More jailed pretrial than ALL incarcerated in India
3)Quarter of China’s pop. 1/2 million more in prison
4)Only country sentencing children to die in prison

“American Exceptionalism.”
Things to be angrier about than Jussie:

1)600k/yr released
2)45k laws excluding those released
3)>1/3 homeless after 6 mos
4)200k denied student loan (s.2001)
5)36 states ban welfare assistance
6)78% jobless in Indiana 5yrs post

System is senseless & undermines public safety.
Only 1/2 thru “Prisoners of Politics.” 100s more enlightening/enraging stats. And this: “1 of greatest tragedies of American domestic policy” is we adopt strategies that “ruin lives but are unnecessary to improve public safety & in many cases actually increase the risk of crime.”
In closing: The reason we have such backwards, wasteful, unnecessary, costly, destructive, ineffective criminal justice “policy” is bc of historic reaction & outrage to outlier cases. We follow our gut instead of our brains. To end mass incarceration, we need to breathe & think.
Also necessary: Being willing to come to grips with & accept the profound American reality of individual & collective racism. Both conscious & unconscious. Overt & ingrained.
