12 MONKEYS is, in my opinion, pretty good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Hadn’t seen it since 1995 in theaters, and I remembered it as perhaps the best movie of the year, which ... it is not.

Still pretty good though.
It’s sort of unpleasantly jarring in the first half, but it definitely picks up steam as Stowe and Willis switch perspectives.

Scene where Cole hears “Blueberry Hill” is one of my favorite moments in Willis’ career.
Also the kid actor who played young Cole is in his mid-30s now and 100% wrote his own IMDb page.

Found one of those anti-trump conservatives I’m told we really need to appeal to in order to win. Offered to stop seeking extremely popular solutions to pressing problems in exchange for her support, so I think it’s going well.

Any advice what to do next?
I think a running start should do the trick; I’ll let you know how it goes.

Generally agree with this description of the Oscar dilemma, but this year it could have been resolved by giving the Best Picture to "A Star is Born":
It made twice as much money as "Green Book," had better reviews, and its leads generated the show's most memorable moment. It wasn't the best movie of the year but it was the movie you reward if you want to be a mass market show without annoying cinephiles.
My sense is that the other factor here was the Trump effect, where Best Picture voters want to make a political statement For These Troubled Times -- and though the woke didn't like Green Book, for the merely liberal it felt like just the middlebrow statement they wanted.

OK, that prologue. It's *NOT* a vision of a better life for Luke. It's a warning from the Force, which has used a dream to slip through Luke's defenses. In both dream and reality, Luke's life is seemingly tranquil but evil is ascendant everywhere else in the galaxy.
Why start there? I wanted to open with Luke and step back in time; to be in Luke's head in a way that would be harder later, when we're exploring Rey's story and he's a mystery she's trying to solve; and to introduce the idea of the Force as almost a character in its own right.

So now watching “Dark Water”, the first part of the two-part eighth season finale.

Clara is a fascinating companion, in large part because she’s essentially riffing on the sense of entitlement that Rose felt.
“He deserved better. And so did you.”
“I don't deserve anything. Nobody deserves anything.”
“But I am owed better. I am owed.”

Clara is selfish and self-centred. But she’s aware of that, and the show is aware of that.

These traits are explored as developed. They make her human.

This is a pure revisionist fantasy. Socrates was the friend, lover, and teacher of a group of brutal tyrants who took over Athens and murdered 5% of the population. Socrates was tried for collaboration, not for resistance.
Let's do just a little bit of history to wrap up the week.

I've done versions of this thread before on my old account, but here it is again. Also, I'm writing a book about this and I'm no longer in the habit of giving away my best work for free, so this is very schematic.
The Peloponnesian War was an imperial war between Athens and Sparta for control of the Aegean and the Greek-speaking world. It lasted from 431 BC until 404 BC.

The war ended with the defeat of Athens by Sparta.
