It’s not just about who’s where in the polls and in fundraising. It’s about who the candidate is, what kind of campaign they’re running, who they want to appeal to and how.
“They’re doing it to move up in the polls” isn’t actually a more sophisticated or illuminating take than “they’re doing it out of pure unalloyed principle.”
Candidates who are similarly positioned in polls and $ will respond to new developments differently, even if both are responding the way they do because of “politics.”
