One of my favorite liberal-imperialist debating tricks is when they wave their hand and say: “What does independence mean anyway? It’s meaningless.”
Of course, that’s not what Parliament thought in the 1530s. They knew it meant that no foreign government and no foreign court would have any jurisdiction in England.
The meaning of independence was clear to the Americans in the 1770s too.
So why is it so unclear to liberal imperialists today? It’s unclear to them only because they badly don’t want it to be clear. They don’t want to admit they’ve destroyed Britain’s independence—and that their aim is to take away everyone else’s too.
