It's fascinating to me just how much Muslim culture has been mainstreamed in pop culture in every medium imaginable—really just in the past few years—in TV, music, advertising, food, etc. Obviously, Donald Trump is partly to thank...
I guess Muslims = cool. Also being pro-Muslim is a pretty easy way to virtue signal (again thanks to Trump). I'm not generally a fan of virtue signaling, but when people are virtue signaling about *you,* well, it's kinda cool

1. If you haven't read @sohrabahmari's "illiberal" manifesto, you should, if only because it represents a view that shouldn't be dismissed. I disagree with much of it, but it's a challenging, important read and it distills a series of fundamental questions firstthings.com/web-exclusives…
2. What Sohrab captures well, that liberals tend to belittle, is how much Christian conservatives feel under attack. Sohrab's piece is reactionary, not in a pejorative sense but in a descriptive one. When he says "But they won't listen," referring to liberals, we should listen
3. But is the public order Sohrab is calling for a threat to me personally, as someone who doesn't share his conception of the Highest Good? Yes, maybe. That doesn't make it illegitimate, but it does mean that I probably shouldn't view it as a pure matter of intellectual interest

Mid-morning break at the Chapo trial. Per @miguelfdzflores, today's testimony from Vicentillo has focused on the Sinaloa cartel's weaponry and murders. Some colorful anecdotes, including one involving a bazooka.
Vicente Zambada testified that 99 percent of the Sinaloa cartel's weapons come from the United States. He said they bring "millions" of bullets a month across the border. Semi-automatic AK-47s purchased in the US would be turned into machine guns by a guy named Pepe el Armero.

Track 1 is "Lazy Sunday", Small Faces. Impossible not to know for a Brit of a certain age but very listenable, and it's no surprise to find that Johnny Rotten cites the Faces as an influence on his vocal style.
Track 2 is "The Plastic Age", The Buggles (1980). Never heard it, very good indeed. The vocals flip between sounding like Suggs and Jon Anderson, and the whole thing goes down very nicely.
Track 3, "A Girl Called Johnny", The Waterboys. Just a bit dull for my taste, although this might be a case of Seinfeld Is Unfunny; so influential that all the bands who copied them have soured me on the sound. Nothing terrible though.

She’s The Queen of Soul, no question - she was actually ‘coronated’ 1967 at Chicago’s Regal Theater. That’s the legend Pervis Spann presiding over an actual crown being placed on the head the then 25-year old Aretha, thus dubbed "The Queen of Soul".

That was over 50 years ago.
