Yesterday, I introduced H.R. 3165, the Mental Health Parity Compliance Act, a bipartisan bill to enforce requirements that health plans and insurers treat mental health services the same as any other type of medical care. (THREAD)
It used to be that health plans and insurers could restrict coverage for mental health more than other medical care, so Congress passed the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act in 2008 to right this wrong.
However, more than a decade later, we’re seeing that health plans and insurers are still violating the law with plans that do not provide equal coverage for mental and medical care. That’s not right, so I introduced a bill to improve enforcement of the existing law.
H.R. 3165 has 3 main parts:
✅ plans & insurers must conduct in-depth reviews for compliance with law
✅ gov’t officials directed to request these reviews if there are patient complaints
✅ 50 plans & insurers selected at random for annual compliance investigation
✅ plans & insurers must conduct in-depth reviews for compliance with law
✅ gov’t officials directed to request these reviews if there are patient complaints
✅ 50 plans & insurers selected at random for annual compliance investigation
