There's many depressing things to say about Britain's new Prime Minister.

Here's a political scientist's take: It shows that institutionalist explanations don't tell us much about populism. Just as water finds its level, populists find a way to succeed in any political system.
For a long time, political scientists said that majoritarian political systems better protect against populism:

If populists have 10% of the vote, they play a large role in systems with proportional representation. But they remain locked out in majoritarian systems.
True.

But now we know that majoritarian systems may be particularly vulnerable once populists are supported by ~30% of the electorate.

Because at that point, they can either take over establishment parties (Trump, Corbyn) or displace them.

Lots of enraged responses to this poll.

But is it really so unlikely that a mediocre tennis player could win *one single point* against a top professional - male or female, Williams or Federer - over the course of a whole match?

Discuss.
A comedian once said that the Olympics should always have someone mediocre competing alongside professionals to showcase pros' skill.

I'd love some top pro to agree to this experiment. Fwiw, I think people underestimate how likely it is that a pro would mess up *once* in a match
Here's an interesting thread from a few months ago that asks a version of this question about Federer.

If people are overestimating the likelihood of being able to score one point, they seem to do it vis-a-vis Federer as well as Williams.

Actually, this is just cruel:

"After conducting a traffic stop, police said the driver, 49-year-old Jennifer Yeager, told them that she drove into town to inflate the pool at a friend's house and had her daughters ride inside the *empty* pool to hold it down on the drive home."
If the pool had been full of water, I'd be with her.

As it is, this is unacceptable.

In case you wondered, as time permits I add Q drops that match the deltas (time between tweets) & timestamps on President Trump’s Tweets as a way to re_read drops & to see if they are deliberate on POTUS part, possibly pointing to a specific drop. Sometimes they seem to be! 😊

One of my favorite things about game design is thinking about how various minorities exist in the world and adapt it to themselves. RPG books tend to pitch cultures as monolithic; e.g., everyone from Cheliax dresses like it's the sexy Spanish Inquisition & had a devil nanny
But by and large, that cultural narrative, like ones from your history book, are going to be generalities. Most Chelish citizens can't afford to dress sexy except to go to sexy church, and certainly can't afford infernal childcare. Cheliax still has farmers and (sexy) cobblers
And these societies still have ethnic, racial, sexual, and gender minorities. How does an ace person get by in the weirdly sexualized culture of Cheliax? Are there alchemical tinctures that deaden your pheromones to make people notice you less? Or a False Flirting spell?

One of my favorite things is seeing someone very intermittently - maybe 10 sessions and then nothing for 3 years, and then 5 sessions, and then twice a yesr, and then 5 more sessions two years later-
You really watch how people transform their lives - how much we change over time with age and patience and maturity. How therapy can serve as the smallest touchpoint over the course of a life that can heal and evolve and reorganize itself.

A profound bearing witness.
You realize how much people just grow on their own, without therapeutic intervention at all - just a momentary shelter or contemplation space at the crossroads.

One of my favorite things about the Northam criticism is how many people are showing that, just like him, they have very little knowledge of history.
The first Africans actually did come over to Virginia in 1619 as indentured servants. Google it and learn a thing and then wonder why you didn’t know that.
The problem isn’t that he got the facts wrong. It’s that by trying to cram Black History 101 he has ONLY the facts with no concept of the history or meaning behind them.

OK, that prologue. It's *NOT* a vision of a better life for Luke. It's a warning from the Force, which has used a dream to slip through Luke's defenses. In both dream and reality, Luke's life is seemingly tranquil but evil is ascendant everywhere else in the galaxy.
Why start there? I wanted to open with Luke and step back in time; to be in Luke's head in a way that would be harder later, when we're exploring Rey's story and he's a mystery she's trying to solve; and to introduce the idea of the Force as almost a character in its own right.
