NEW: DOJ is filing notices in census citizenship question cases about the lawyers who are withdrawing and the new lawyers coming in, here's one filed in CA: assets.documentcloud.org/documents/6185… No explanation given for the change.
STORY: DOJ makes it official that they're changing up the lawyers in the census citizenship Q litigation. They don't give a reason why. What we know so far – the new lawyers come from offices that do consumer protection, immigration, and civil fraud work buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil…
Here are some details on the new DOJ lawyers handling the citizenship Q litigation:
- The official now in charge is David Morell, who leads the Consumer Protection Branch. He's a political apointee and prev. served in the White House counsel's office

- The new court filings are signed by Glenn Girdharry, a career attorney who as of a June 28 filing in an unrelated case was serving as assistant director of the Office of Immigration Litigation

- Colin Kisor is on the new team. As of a court filing literally from today in an unrelated case, he's deputy director of the Office of Immigration Litigation (also a career attorney) buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil…
- Christopher Reimer, another member of DOJ's new census legal team, was in the Civil Fraud Section as of a May filing in another case; that section falls under the Commercial Litigation Branch

- Daniel Schiffer is in the Civil Fraud Branch, per LinkedIn (wasn't immediately able to find recent court records)

This is all to say: DOJ's new legal team in the census citizenship Q litigation is made up of attorneys from across the Civil Division, but no longer anyone from the Federal Programs Branch, which would normally handle it. Why the change? DOJ isn't saying buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil…

Stone's motion hearing is underway — they'll be talking about Stone's motion to suppress evidence and a discovery motion re: redactions in CrowdStrike report provided by govt. Judge Amy Berman Jackson is on the bench.
Jackson says she "may or may not" get to the govt's motion to modify Stone's release conditions re: compliance with the gag order, sounds like it'll depend on how long args take on the other motions. Judge also says she plans to rule soon in writing on Stone's motions to dismiss.

Last night, we got the latest status report in the Ms. L family separations class action: assets.documentcloud.org/documents/6191… A few highlights: Five more kids, whose parents were *not* in the class, were discharged from govt care (such as to sponsors)
There is still one kid left in ORR care who was part of the *original class period*, meaning they were separated as of June 2018 — no timeline for discharge, and it's clear if they'll be released to a sponsor or reunified with a parent (not in the United States)

Federal judge has issued a significant rebuke of a core Mueller claim. Mueller claims that the IRA -- a Russian troll farm -- was the 2nd of "two principal interference operations" by Russian gov't. But as judge notes, Mueller's implied link between IRA & Russian gov't was false:
This is a major blow not just to Mueller but to the entire "Russian Active Measures" talking point. As the judge acknowledges, the IRA (which, btw, put out juvenile clickbait mostly unrelated to the election) is a private entity & Mueller never establishes a Kremlin connection.
