Now, they're not all great or even good at what they do (Grayling) but my goodness is the average talent level in Cabinet plummeting! Like a stone.
And if you doubt that, just think of the people who are coming in before focusing on those who are leaving. Overall it's a gigantic net loss.

Reading about the Fermi Paradox (hey, there's no intelligent life *down here* so I had to expand my horizons...) it strikes me that the most plausible explanation for lack of alien visitation is the "we've not been around long enough" one.

In other words, since we've only been broadcasting for 124 years, an alien civilisation would have to be within 124 lightyears of Earth to have even noticed. And if they were more than 62 lightyears away, we wouldn't have seen a response yet even if they fired it off immediately.
So it's somewhat hubristic to expect a visit from aliens this quickly. Unless intelligent life is very, very common, and listening *all the time*, we could quite easily have passed undetected so far despite our progress to date. But it's far more hubristic to assume we're alone.

What happens if...
1) Boris Johnson fails to get a new deal
2) BJ guns for no deal
3) Parliament decides to block no deal
4) Parliament tries to pass legislation to revoke A50

Can Parliament do that? Not clear. Why would they do it? Because a GE might still produce no deal.
So if MPs are really really serious about killing off no deal, a GE is too dangerous. Even a second referendum arguably is.

And what of the democracy argument? Well, things really will have changed. Because MPs will be faced with someone absolutely determined to inflict no deal.
So it's no longer abstract. It's something actively being manoeuvred towards.

If you've not yet quit Labour, today's the day to cut up your membership card (and cancel your direct debit of course!) They've just bottled the VONC, even though this was the last possible day to call it and be 100% certain of getting a snap GE done by Brexit Day. RT RT RT!

In the 23 months since the general election 47 ministers have resigned or been sacked from Theresa May's government. That's just about two a month.
To the surprise of many, none of them were Chris Grayling.
To put it another way, 15% of all Conservative MPs have either resigned or been sacked from the government in the last two years.

Some thoughts on a law (publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/cbill…) being rushed through Parliament to let NI civil servants act as quasi-ministers. If you live in NI, this is about how you're governed. If you're in GB, you should care about it because it involves spending billions of your taxes...
This has profound constitutional and democratic implications, involving Parliament (presumably an empty chamber nodding it through because it's NI legislation) explicitly allowing civil servants to take ministerial decisions - with no democratic oversight.
The bill will retrospectively legalise something which Northern Ireland's highest court (in Buick) found was unlawful (servants taking decisions which ought to be for ministers) & which civil servants accepted by not appealing to the Supreme Court. But it won't overturn Buick.
