In the 23 months since the general election 47 ministers have resigned or been sacked from Theresa May's government. That's just about two a month.
To the surprise of many, none of them were Chris Grayling.
To put it another way, 15% of all Conservative MPs have either resigned or been sacked from the government in the last two years.

Off the back of our no deal ferries story yesterday, the Speaker has granted an urgent question on the subject at 1130. Chris Grayling once again dragged to the dispatch box.
Chris Grayling is once again talking about the ferry contracts as “an insurance policy”. But if that is what it was, why cancel the policy given no deal is coming again in October? Either the govt doesn’t believe no deal will ever happen or they’re incompetently written.
What is fascinating is that these contracts came into operation on March 29th automatically, not when no deal came into place. I suspect the govt wanted to write those dates in, not have something more flexible, because they didn’t want it to leak that that date might slip.

EXC: I understand that the Department for Transport is cancelling their no deal ferry contracts. And guess what: the ferry companies will be paid anyway. A proportion of the cost of the contract will be paid. If no deal planning is resumed, likely new contracts will be needed.
The Department for Transport says: “We are reviewing contingency plans to ensure costs to the taxpayer are minimised and are already selling additional ferry capacity back to the market.”
One ferry company gives some indication of the disruption they've gone through to prepare: "since Dec we have changed our schedules, added 20 weekly sailings, disrupted 30k passengers and hired more staff, all to be ready for what is now not needed..."

I had cabinet resignations down for yesterday.
We know what today is. Final extension which Theresa May is forced to accept.
And once parliament agrees to it, she resigns.
Once we've got a year's extension, we know Theresa May will resign because there'll be another leadership contest comes up in the normal way before the extension expires.

Once we get the extension, her part in this tale is over.
So if everyone - including her - knows she's going to be booted out sometime before the extension expires, she'd much better off go now, and everyone can move on.

The EU has made clear that if the UK wants an extension it would need to do one of three things:

- general election
- referendum
- political process to reach a consensus

Theresa May’s move this evening is an attempt at the third, to avoid the first two

No extension, barring revocation, means no-deal on 12 April. Reckon Theresa May has calculated that this is the path of least resistance
Domestic political backdrop is this: when Corbyn last refused to meet with May, he faced a backlash which Labour insiders say cut through to voters. They won’t want to make the same mistake again, and neither party will want to be seen as intransigent. Game of reverse chicken

2. You could see it at her press conference : she hadn't been hit so hard since the general election.

This was not supposed to happen.
