What is gerrymandering and why is it bad for democracy?

Redistricting is the process of updating district lines to reflect changing populations. Gerrymandering is the process of redrawing those lines in a way that benefits one political party or elected official.
A gerrymandered state means the district lines are drawn to enable one party to win fewer votes statewide, but still control more seats in government.
Gerrymandering is often most detrimental to communities who have historically been marginalized — including minority communities — by either packing similar voters into a single district or splitting them into many districts to dilute their influence.
Currently, countless district maps have been deliberately manipulated to favor a political party. States have to redistrict; they do not have to gerrymander.

This is not what democracy should look like.

Recently someone asked me what I think will make Nigeria better, and I replied “Democracy”.
The guy was suggesting our ministers be taken on a tour to grave sites of executed corrupt officials, on the day of their orientation, to scare them. 🤣🤣

Democracy is when the people choose their leaders, when they can feel the power to hire and fire their leaders; not when leaders pick themselves.
Democracy produces responsible leaders.
This is why it is important to use any opportunity given to strengthen our democracy.
Jonathan understood this, and signed the electoral act that saw him out of office, because he saw a bigger picture.
If Buhari had signed the new electoral act into law, his loss would’ve been too clear to rig.
But he would’ve been remembered for strengthening Democracy.

On this one year anniversary of the election of Donald J Trump to the presidency of the United States, we take a moment to reflect upon the past and ponder our path forward. Without question, the election of President Trump saved our Union from a race to oblivion.
As the past year has shown, we have major issues within our government and its going to take YEARS to right the ship. One man, one election is not going to do it. Voting republican or voting this or that is not sufficient on its own. The governmental problems are systemic.
For over a century the progressives have had it their goal to tear down our system of government. That damned Constitution is simply too rigid for those with grand ambitions. The Constitution that preserves our rights and our Union is seen as an obstacle to those people.
