Um. You should only be getting LED lightbulbs for the home at this point (as opposed to incandescents or fluorescents). The only choices are:
- color temporature
- dimmable
- smart vs. dumb
Sure, the early market for LEDs a few years ago meant lots of really bad products. These days, the market is full of cheap and good quality LED lightbulbs.
Your first choice is color temperature. People are accustomed to a "warm", meaning "yellow/reddish" temperature, because that was the color of firelight and incandescent filaments. I've swapped all mine for those that emulate sunlight, and like it much better.
Dimmers don't work like you expect (reducing voltage or current to dim bulbs). They instead switch on/off very quickly, with long periods in "off" the dimmer you go. This interacts poorly with LEDs.
You therefore either need a dimmer lightswitch that knows about LEDs, or LEDs with added circuits to accomodate lightswitches.
The next question is whether to go with smart bulbs. Smart bulbs are coming down in price and are often only a little bit more expensive.
Your LEDs will last 20 years. In other words, they'll outlast the current style, and you'll remodel the room before you replace the LEDs. Thus, instead of lights designed around easy replacement, you can install entire lighting fixtures with LEDs embedded.
LEDs are not straightforward replacements. You need more, dimmer LEDs. They are intolerant of heat, so if you are having them fail, it's probably in a recessed lighting fixture that doesn't dissipate heat well enough. So you need to change the entire fixture.
They sell complete replacements for recessed lighting because of this heat dissipation issue:
