@SecretaryLawson @davidmeyers Any competent hackers that wants to conceal switched votes could easily design their attacks to scan the voting machine & determine if it has a printer attached, not cheat on that machine.This is rudimentary. Additionally, studies have found voters don't reliably verify the VVPAT
For the cost of 3 VVPAT devices a county could buy an optical scanner and an assistive BMD and have every voter voting on auditable paper ballots. This is an absolute absurd boondoggle. @davidmeyers

Adding a VVPAT printer to 10% of DREs is beyond foolish. VVPAT's have been found to be unreliable, if not useless, to provide a physical record of voter intent because voters rarely check them. But that's not all. Any reasonable attack could & would avoid the 10% of machines ...
...that have a VVPAT to easily ensure that the attack could not be detected at all. That leaves 90% of machines an attack could manipulate entirely without even the slightest chance of detection. This $10M folly provides absolutely NO security or protections against hacking...

.@NCSBE chair disingenuously prioritized expediency over getting POLICY RIGHT even as NC voters universally & forcefully rejected barcode ballots. The Board, led by the chair, voted against a provision to prevent barcode BMDs because of expediency.

1. Thread. Contrary to popular belief, Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails ("VVPATs") and/or COMPUTER marked ballots from Ballot Marking Devices ("electronic pencils") are NOT acceptable substitutes for #handmarked #paperballots counted on optical scanners (or by hand).

1. New Jersey (like Georgia) still exclusively uses PAPERLESS (unverifiable) voting machines! "[L]awmakers took ... measures in 2005 and 2007 to require paper ballots and audits of them, but a lack of funding meant neither law has been implemented." northjersey.com/story/news/new…
