Its commonly called 'malaria blister', 'fever blister' or 'isirun' in Yoruba language. Most people would have had it at one time or the other. I'm talking about Cold sores or herpetic sores. Caused by a virus called Herpes simplex virus.
There are two types of this virus. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 and 2.
Type 1 causes 85% of oral sores while type 2 causes 85% of genital ulcers. It is important to note that either 1 or 2 can cause infections in oral or genital areas. Anyone exposed to the virus can get infected
Especially in cases where the immune system is 'tired'. That's why its not unusual to find it in people with febrile illnesses.
Having the blister once doses not confer immunity. This means it can recur. It is important to note that.
Usually starts as small blisters (clear fluid filled swellings) on the lips which later ruptures to leave some ulcers that heal in about 7 to 10 days. It has an incubation period that may be as long as 3 weeks.
This means that you can be infected with the virus and not manifest symptoms until about 3 weeks after exposure to the virus. And while the person is carrying the virus WITHOUT manifesting symptoms, you can still transmit the virus. The genital ones also has a similar presentation
Things not to do when you have the virus
1) Please don't go kissing anyone especially babies. Edakun. Nobody should even be kissing babies on the lips. Please🙄🙄
2) Don't even think about oral sex. You can genital herpes this way.
Edakun
Things to do in managing it
1) Please take lots of fruits and vegetables with lots of water
2) Your doctor may prescribe some antivirals (even though it's not necessary in most cases)
3) Apply some soothing lip balm on the area
It will run its course in about a week.
Here's a picture of how cold sores look like.
