asking if oligarchs are "good" billionaires or have "good intentions" is like asking if a King or feudal lord has good intentions. Sometimes they can be less evil than others but thats not the point. The point is they shouldnt have that much undemocratic power in the first place.
it's really the point people seem to be missing. Gates wields TREMENDOUS power over global health, education, agriculture for tens of millions––often in very poor countries. But he was not elected by anyone nor is he accountable to anyone. His rule is capricious and arbitrary.
his only claim to legitimacy is that he's some kind of brain genius wizard of numbers who is best equipped to run the global south. This is why he has to get his court hagiographers like Davis Guggenheim to make netflix informercials for him about how goddamn brilliant he is.
Because if we don't believe he's some mega genius then he's just someone who got rich off computers. He's just some... guy. A dude. A random dude whose only claim to legitimacy is that he's super rich which isn't that compelling or morally sensical.
well, that too. He's a once-in-a-generation brain genius wizard who we should trust with global health, education, and agriculture policy but he also didn't think "hum, maybe raising money with a convicted serial child rapist and trafficker is a bad idea"
