the berlin wall is one of those "kids today" kind of things. i was 11 when the wall fell and it was one of those things growing up where you thought it was always there and would always be there. #BerlinWall30
people who are grown adults now think of it the way i probably think about archaic things from the vietnam and wwii eras. and they will think the same way about 9/11 and other events that dominated the world for so long.
my late mother and i watched the wall come down, anchored by peter jennings on abc. its something i'll never forget.

This guy, he was a big war hero. He had all these medals, I don't know if he got them legitimate, but he had these medals. And they said "sir, you cannot defeat him, he is a war hero and you are only a first term senator." And I said, I think I can beat him. And we won didnt we?

i dont like articles like this because the premise is faulty. they concede that biden's not specifically targeting catholics, hasn't changed his abortion position, etc. then they have an anecdote where he makes a quote and they try to jam that into the frame.
but biden is ALWAYS making quotations like this. he always references philosophers, etc. so the main premise of the story - "biden is reaching out to catholics" is not accurate. he's reaching out to blue collar types, but its not distinctly "catholic." bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
(i was all set to read this and roll my eyes about some bullshit move on abortion or being soft on racism, but none of that was in the story)

If you wanted a home computer behind the Iron Curtain you had two choices: buy a locally produced clone of a Western one...

Insofar as the Worlds project (our now-retired patreon) was an effort to expand the pool of Fate-savvy authors out there, this was an early sign that the strategy worked. Plus you can’t beat fantasy skyships in space. I mean you might SAY you can… but you can’t.

One privilege I Had growing up upper middle class in Nigeria is that I could come out as Agnostic to my Dad.

Mans obviously did not like it, but moved on at the end of the day.

Because he does not rely on Jesus for hope, he relies on Jesus for Salvation
My dad sees Jesus Christ as his personal Lord & Savior,

But uses his education to reason and his good career is the profit he gets for thinking well.

Now compare this with a lower income family, its a different story if a child come out as atheist
Trust is, southern Nigeria is not as conservative as we think we are.

We are just poor,

And. Poverty is the perfect breeding ground for religious fanaticism,

Poverty is a disease.

A thread, because I’m too geeky to be allowed to play with the other children. Also, because sociology is fun, and generational theory isn’t.
To an extent, Generational Theory is bullshit. There are no dividing lines between people born in, say, 1944 versus 1946.

Their experiences, if they are of the same race, nationality, gender, class, and socioeconomic status, are likely to be far more similar than different.
But that similarity is primarily the effect of all of the other axes.

Growing up in abject rural poverty versus extremely affluent, urban, Old Money Knickerbocker society is a far bigger divide, even if both people were born on the exact same day.
