Extraordinary to hear Morrison Government defend failure to invest in more home care by saying the workforce isn’t there to support more packages. What excuse are they going to use next - the dog ate their homework? Here are the facts. #auspol 1/6
One of the first acts of the Liberal Government, in its 2014 horror Budget, was to scrap Labor’s $1.5 billion Aged Care Workforce Compact which was specifically designed to address aged care workforce issues. 2/6
For more than a year the Morrison Government has been sitting on a comprehensive report on building the workforce Australia’s aged care system requires – but there is no evidence they have fully responded to even one of the report’s 14 actions. 3/6
In fact – the author of the report gave evidence at the Royal Commission earlier this year that the Government wouldn’t even respond to his requests for an update on how they were progressing each of his recommendations. 4/6
What was equally concerning was evidence that the Department of Health recommended the Government not formally respond to this report because its track record on responding to other aged care reports was so bad it would be embarrassing. 5/6
The Government has known for a very long time that they needed to act on Australia’s aged care workforce. When 16,000 older Australians died waiting for home care in just one year, it is not good enough from them to say the workforce is not there as an excuse to not act now. 6/6
