...but slip through one of the portals and you find yourself transported to another world: quiet, relaxed, safe, even lusher, private courtyards. Less than a second stroll away from a busy commercial high street. This is an example of absolute #MasterClassUrbanism. #Proveniershof
The courtyard and its houses as we know them today are mostly from 1681, built as cheaper housing for less well off (but not completely destitute widowers and older men).
"Affordable housing", in other words.

About four hours north of Kyoto by train and bus is the town of Ine, on the north coast of Japan, famous for its unique vernacular architecture, the “funaya”: combined homes and boathouses. #伊根町 #京都府
The town of Ine is perched on the narrow strip of land between the mountain and the ocean, running at 5km, it has a total of 230 of these unique wooden boathouses, fronting the water, with the main family home on the mountain side of the only street in town.
First built in the 17th century, the boathouses were simple log structures with thatched roofs, gavel fronting the sea, but over time they were converted to two story buildings with the second story becoming the home of younger family members. As the village grew land was scarce.

I'll be reviewing a LOT of design / illustration job applications today, as I have been for the past few weeks, and I'd like to start a thread about things I see and notice, and recommendations to improve your applications across the board.
I want to emphasize that this is just my opinions and perspective, but I hope that it will be helpful to all you folks applying to different things out there!
The first thing I'd like to say is that while @Greenhouse has made life a lot easier for applying + applications all in one place, it is also a very convoluted and confounding program for hiring managers, especially when we don't work at big co.'s with built-out hiring teams.

1. A miracle.
2. In 2009 or 2010, I was driving north on Vermont Avenue in South Central LA. I had a blue 2000 Kia Sephia which I had acquired used. It served me well until about 2012 when having the radiator fixed would have cost me more than what I had paid for it.
3. Side note: the Kia was my first automatic. I had been driving standards since buying my first car in 1981, but I switched to automatics because, by the mid-2000s, my left knee was making noise when I walked and had gone out on me once.
