Imagine writing this article and not mentioning that one of the defining features of slavery was that the marriages of enslaved people had no legal standing so that white people could sell them and break up those marriages without having to break the law. thefederalist.com/2020/01/13/if-…
The person who wrote this article was a history major with a masters in teaching. He's talking about marriages and plantations as if those spaces have no historical meaning.
A white wedding at a plantation is an act of either utter historical ignorance, or an intentional trolling of black Americans. "Come celebrate our new family at a site where one if its defining features was that the owners tried to destroy black family life for profit."
I'm not the first to note this, but it is interesting how many of the people who say we need to just forget and "get over" slavery also love Civil War reenactments and think we should scrupulously obey the intent of the founders.
Here's an older thread where I explored how contemporary historical memory around "plantations" like Mt. Vernon is deeply racialized and politicized. It is impossible and irresponsible to detach these sites from the violent history that produced them.
