Flashback to 1 year ago today. GOP congressmen Andy Harris and Phil Roe were spotted walking and chatting with Chuck C. Johnson, a prominent Holocaust denying white supremacist. They had waited for him to go through security so they could chat with him.
This same Johnson guy was the invited State of the Union guest of GOP Rep Matt Gaetz in 2018. He's also posed flashing the white power hand gesture with Russophile former congressman Dana Rohrbacher and the lovely Richard Spencer. Lovely company the GOP is keeping these days, eh?
The cherry on top is that the day before, the House GOP leadership had punished Steve King for his links to white nationalists. And then in strolls Chuck. nytimes.com/2019/01/14/us/…

Where he offered a defense of a fellow white nationalist that at least gets points for honesty.

As someone who is a historian, in part, because I was 8 during the bicentennial in 1976, I was interested to see who was involved with organizing the Semiquincentennial in 2026. It's...well...not ideal.
Here's the official list that was made up in 2017. There is only one formally trained historian on the list (from what I can tell). He's a good historian, and also an outspoken conservative. historycoalition.org/wp-content/upl…
Any time a nation tries to tell a celebratory story about itself it'll be less than rigorously honest. This was the case with the book most associated with the 1976 bicentennial.

Trump has accelerated the takeover of the GOP by folks who think like this Red Dawn cosplayer. The people in the GOP who do not share this view of the world are too cowardly to speak out against it.
If you think the domestic terrorist threat that Virginia is currently dealing with is just a matter of a few neo-Nazis, you're kidding yourself. This was posted on the official FB page of the Cambria County, PA GOP. We all know what cowboys did to their "enemies," right?
Here's more content from that official GOP FB page. They are literally encouraging Republicans to think that a Democratic electoral victory means that conservatives will be put in gulags and liquidated.

Several members of a heavily armed white nationalist militia have been arrested by Trump’s own FBI because they were planning violence at Monday’s pro-gun rally in Virginia. Now Trump pours fuel on the fire. This is the President, encouraging domestic terrorism.
For his own political advantage, the President is putting in jeopardy the lives of Virginia politicians (one is already in hiding due to death threats), ordinarily citizens, and law enforcement officers. cnn.com/2020/01/17/us/…

Harris ran for DA as anti-death penalty. She was elected. Those who are pro-death penalty will always object. Harris is right. Reviving this 15yrs later panders to the #GOP.

Clarifying that I meant #Harris was right on her death penalty stance and that it is my stance that @CNN reviving this story is the pandering aspect.

One feels for the widow, but we are not served by the death penalty in a civilized society..

1 year ago today, GOP operative Peter Smith killed himself. Suicide note said "NO FOUL PLAY WHATSOEVER." The @WSJ later reported on his efforts in 2016 to get Clinton's emails off the dark web (from Russians) and how he claimed ties to Team Trump. Much of this remains a mystery.
Peter Smith's suicide came about 10 days after @WSJ reporters interviewed him. He acknowledged his efforts to get Clinton's emails from shadowy hackers expressed openness to getting the emails from Russians. Here is that first story wsj.com/articles/gop-o…
Peter Smith left behind a blog about politics, and I've read many of his posts. He staunchly opposed the US intel community assessments on Russian hacking/meddling. A lot of his blog posts mirrored the Kremlin's favored talking points regarding WikiLeaks, Podesta, etc.
