Macroeconomics 8th edition is out. Compared to the first edition (1997), I am struck by two things. The architecture has not changed. But the degree to which what was exotic then is, at least for the time being, the new normal.
On the architecture of the book. Short (first), medium, long run. Equilibrium in goods markets, financial markets, labor markets. A major role for expectations, and how medium and long run affect short run. I still think it is the right way.
Still struck at the importance of the IS relation. How trying to save more, by people or government, is likely to lead, in the short run, to less saving, less investment, less output. Fundamental insight that non economists often fail to have.
Still struck at the usefulness of the IS-LM as a first pass, thought organizer. Easy to add, and extend. In that sense, the opposite of (or, on a more positive note, the complement to) the NK model, with its rigid structure.
On changes since 1997: Struck at how the financial crisis has led to a much richer view of financial markets, and their role in fluctuations. Financial markets in the first edition were simply a set of arbitrage equations.
Struck at how the financial crisis and then low interest rates have forced a transformation of monetary policy, and a reassessment of the relative roles of monetary and fiscal policy. This is starting, and will evolve further.
Struck by how the discussion of growth has changed, with more focus on increasing challenges, from inequality and its political economy implications, to global warming and how we shall handle it--or not.
Finally: Happy that Pearson has adopted a more realistic pricing policy. Lower royalties for the author, but the end of what had become obscene prices.
