On this day, 377 years ago, Lord Hoshikawa Tsunetoshi was born. He gained lasting fame for his extremely honorable treatment of the 17 captives placed in his care of the 47 Ronin of the famous Ako Incident in 1702. The legacy of his noble handling of his prisoners still lives on.
The site of the Hosokawa Seventeen's last days in life and execution has been lost together with the original artifacts but the ground itself is now protected and enclosed between a school and a few apartment buildings in Minato Ward, central Tokyo (大石良雄外十六人忠烈の跡).
The Hosokawa family still receives prestige from their noble ancestor, and the current head of the family, 47 year old Morimitsu, 細川護光 (although no longer nobility, as it was abolished in 1947) is a rather famous ceramic artist. shibunkaku.co.jp/exhibition/lis…
And of course there is a mistake in the first tweet: Hosokawa. Not sure if it is my brain or autocorrect playing tricks with me at this point.
