Basically exactly what medics were screaming from rooftops about “mitigation” not supression strategy... we don’t have the critical care capacity even of Italy. question is that now we are trying to suppress, would that not have worked better a week ago?

Nothing to do with blame game..but it shows reasoned questioning is vital

People having to cope with this now are those trying to save lives in critical care/ A&E units, many of whom also deeply concerned about

- protective equipment shortage
- lack of testing for medics/nurses
Also, as it was explained to me, in simple terms

- key modelling is based on influenza... hence obsession with second peak like Spanish flu.

- A Coronavirus is not influenza.

- Public health experts were not saying the same thing as mathematical modellerss = split in science
logical point right now is that this is about A&E and critical care capacity...

Real q on that is “why have doctors and nurses died in China and Italy?”.

Inadequate PPE?
Immune system down because of too many hours or weak immunity?
Told to work despite possible exposure?
LSE Assistant professor of public health @clarewenham spoke to @deb_cohen on Newsnight a week ago about the split in scientific opinion between

1. WHO/ Public Health England &
2. Modellers of outbreaks

Ie there has been a split all along.
And the WHO’s head of mission to China also warned on that same @BBCNewsnight to watch what was happening on the ground, not to be very very careful about use of models, esp because coronavirus is not influenza
One other dynamic - if WHO China expert is right - above all we need and needed surveillance and information from other countries... it was doctors in contact with counterparts in Italy who have been screaming from the rooftops about our more severe critical care constraints...
Such intel available at daily European health ministers vidcall of EU27 plus Swiss -dont know if we’ve not been invited, or haven’t asked - but if shows we’re late for ex learning Italian lessons, obvious to frontline doctors, surely mutual interest to go
Another excellent @alexwickham write through of split in the science that was actually out in open - see above - much of the reasoned questioning (basically emanating from doctors watching Italy) of early Govt strategy was spot on..

In piece Alex cites criticism from within Government about the PM’s message on Thursday that we will “send the virus packing” when he should have sternly be telling the public to go home, miscoordination of econ rescue announcements with first advice to close restaurants & pubs..
It’s largely been lost, but also astonishing the Bank of England Governor had to go public on Thursday that Wednesday’s London lockdown rumours caused extremely volatile “borderline disorderly” market movements - ie adding to £ fall - inc pressure for emergency rates cut/ QE
