“get off the Brexit fence & put his weight behind [...] something that would break the deadlock”

"Catalonia and the trial on the referendum: a challenge for the EU". Conferència conjunta amb el president @QuimTorraiPla a Brussel·les

Last Tuesday, a political trial against members of the previous @govern, against social leaders of the main civil organizations of #Catalonia and against the former president of the @parlamentcat began in Spain #CatalanEU
The simple fact that this trial could take place brings #ShametoSpain and, therefore, to the entire #EuropeanUnion, whose main institutions have chosen to remain silent, when facing such a disgraceful situation where democracy is at stake #CatalanEU

Three important, personal and academic milestones for me today. It is 2 years today since I joined @lawstrath as a Professor of Law. Fantastic colleagues and students. A pleasure to be in #Glasgow and #Scotland: a vibrant, welcoming and European place.
The EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement comes into force today. My first conference presentation (also in Glasgow) and publications was on this. Contemporary relevance? This deal has been 20 years in the making (take note, Brexit Britain). japanesestudies.org.uk/articles/2005/…
Two years exactly since I left @lawsheffield, my research on the academic impact of #Erasmus and study abroad based on 1300+ graduating students from Sheffield over 5 years is out. Clear evidence that students who go abroad achieve better degree results. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

Happy #BurnsNight2019!

My favourite Robert Burns fact: his connection to abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who called him "the man who taught me a man's a man for a' that"

#TaeTheBard
👇
Robert Burns didn't live at the same time as Douglass, but his work had travelled to the new United States and his lyrical discussion of freedom and liberty - what it means to be free - inspired people all over a country failing to live up to its founding ideals.
#TaeTheBard
Douglass had already chosen his last name based on the work of Sir Walter Scott, which the man he stayed with after becoming free had been reading. But it was Burns he talked of and wrote about. When an American questioned him, he wrote:

Here's a short thread (20 tweets Ha!) on why I ended up in Keith, Moray from #Norwich in Norfolk & why I wouldn't live in any other nation. This is about about how #Scotland became my home because of love & how this led to support for independence & #SNPOrganiser for Keith 1/20
For context - towards the end of 2014 I came out of a mentally & emotionally exhausting long distance relationship w/ an American, I had just started a degree in Computer Science @uniofeastanglia & found myself content in my own company & 'aloneness' .. 2/20
Scrolling my @tumblr blog, I came across a blog that I found interesting. in 1 post Mr McDonald had written about jumping some stairs in his flat, smashing his head on a door frame, and coming too on his floor w/ blood pouring out his skull. I thought it was funny. 3/20

Two young soccer players bought their mothers houses. Lovely story, right? Except one is Black and the other is white. Read headlines in British paper and then read Raheem Sterling explain Racism 101.

This thread is entirely 2018 analysis and as unbiased as I can make it. Collated as I find a lack of signposts to the raw analysis in the media and political discourse, which are high on spin low on facts. Hopefully this will be helpful.

Happy #StAndrewsDay everybody! Here's my top 10 of the most Scottish things ever. You may be surprised...
At no 10: holidays in Aberdeen! It's not that cold when you get used to it. A wee bit radioactive due to the granite, but not so you'd notice...
At no 9: The Broons! Sitting on an upturned bucket, but looking at the stars...

1)I don't have too many followers but I would appreciate if you could RT.

My Great Uncle Eion passed away a fortnight ago, when sorting his things we found his #WW2 diary. From 17yo he fought across Europe and Africa. A true #British hero who gave my generation lasting #peace.
2) Jan 27th was the first time he was wounded. Less than a year after joining the Para's.

By the end of April he was on the front lines at the infamous battle for Monte Cassino. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of…
3) I've been told by those who have served in different branches of the military that one of the toughest things they have to deal with is when the promise of being relieved from the front line is cancelled. It happened to my Uncle. A lot.

I suppose we can safely say that now #TheFrighteners have been so successfully and publicly put on a certain sector their combined angst will spew a diarrhoea of spin & warp whilst trying to use THAT VERY THING to generate $£Es Some with automated AdTech software already bought.
2/ Some bought by gormless companies, by mistake, some in full knowledge or partial knowledge of what it could do. It will be interesting as time goes on to see who apparently DIDN'T CARE about the likely instigation of its more negative 'dark' capabilities looking to 'side-step'
3/ or even 'wrong-foot' Irish & EU regulation standards, & possibly law. This too is a kind of #climatechange & #ClimateAction in itself, a would be mammoth untouchable iceberg of 'dominion' & 'control' being melted out into an ocean of citizens' scrutiny & advancement for change

We are delighted to announce that the first #MND clinical drug trial in Scotland, in over 20 years, has launched! 👏 MND Scotland is committing over £1.5 million into bringing MND drug trials to Scotland, with #MIROCALS being the first investment. mndscotland.org.uk/latest/news/fi…
#MIROCALS is a clinical trial currently taking place in the UK and France. It is testing a new potential therapy for #ALS, the most common form of #MND. The drug being tested is called Interleukin-2, which is already used for some types of cancer.
Now recruiting people with #MND in #Glasgow, who meet the criteria, the study will focus on types of immune cells in the blood, which are capable of influencing the speed at which #ALS progresses. Find out more about the trial here: mndscotland.org.uk/mirocals

What is happening to some parts of #America? I mean seriously…

An online conspiracy theory known as “QAnon”, which is pushing dangerous disinformation on internet messaging boards, is gripping #Trump supporters.

These people are worse than clueless.

washingtonpost.com/news/morning-m…
#pt: Read this explainer on the @washingtonpost - it’s truly bizarre.

And people are believing this -- swallowing it hook, line & sinker.
@washingtonpost #QAnon followers think there are Illuminati around the world seeking to assassinate the President & that [for example] a paraglider who died near #Trump’s golf course in #Scotland was in fact an undercover Secret Service officer “shot” with “a heart attack gun.”

No kidding.

A bilingual sign tells you more than just where you need to go.

It tells you a country has more than one native language.

It tells you how the names for places are connected, or sometimes not, between languages.

It teaches you what others call that place in their language.
It demonstrates that the country values linguistic diversity and equality between linguistic communities.

It may tell you that you are entering a place whether another language is more predominent.
It tells you that you may expect to hear another language or experience another culture upon arrival.

It may tell you that folk spoke a now minoritised language in a place before the dominant majority language.

Time once again for our occasional series Forgotten Pulp Genres. Today I'm looking at... sexy space pulp!
It wasn't long after man first went into orbit that people* began asking the obvious question: how do you have sex in space?

(*particularly the French)
Well, near-earth orbit nookie is a difficult thing apparently. It's hard enough getting a Soyuz to dock with the ISS, let alone anything else...

Today in pulp I look back at the career of prolific pulp horror legend Guy N Smith. Stand by for werewolves, crabs, locusts and many other baffling beasties running amok...
To say Guy N Smith is prolific is an understatement: he has over a thousand short stories and magazine articles published, as well as writing for countryside magazines and promoting pipe smoking. Quite a busy guy...
Guy N Smith's mother was historical novelist E.M. Weale. He published his first story aged 12 and write 55 more before he turned 17. At his father's insistence he went into banking as a career, before moving into the shotgun trade.

Me and JK Rowling; A Thread: I grew up not just with Harry Potter but down the road from JK Rowling, in Edinburgh. A place where it was easy to imagine the world she had created had come to life. Like most children and teens, I was obsessed with the books and couldn't wait for
each new one. Going past her house on the bus I would desperately try and peer over the fence. Reading interviews I felt inspired by her story, her clear love of Scotland and her struggles as a single mum. Like me, she seemed to be a true socialist at heart, and the books
reflected that too; they were full of stories about justice, love and kindness. I was perhaps a bit let down when I found out her kids attended private school, since Edinburgh has so many excellent state schools, mine being one of them. But she was still a hero, an inspiration.

[Thread] A photo journey through an island in the Outer Hebrides off the coast of #Scotland, Lewis and Harris, with a small bit of #tech/#Amazon/#Netflix thrown in for good measure 🤓
Lewis and Harris is about a 3-hour ferry ride from Ullapool, which is already probably further up into Scotland than the vast majority of people will ever go. The view as you leave the Ullapool harbor is 😗
Once you get to Lewis and Harris (pop. 22,000), you've got a pretty wide open landscape in front of you.

Dear Scotland,

Let's look at the reality...
What people forget is the news media's apparent hostility towards @theSNP is one of the reasons social media became a core communications channel for the party early on (2010), before other UK political parties began taking part. The approach was simple in theory, difficult to...
... carry out, but remarkably successful:
• You can't pretend to be social.
• This is all about building real, trusted relationships at scale, over time.
• Be authentic and engage, enthuse, educate and empower people around @theSNP & the idea of an independent #Scotland.
