This is death worship. Human sacrifice. It's not science or rationalism. It's throwing your friends and neighbors into the burning bronze idol in hopes that Moloch will be pleased by your gift.
And here's the thing—the reason I say this is Moloch worship. It's not about accepting mass death as the price of economic prosperity, because as everyone who has spent five seconds studying the question knows, you can't buy prosperity with human bodies in a pandemic.
If you want the economy to recover, you have to stop the virus first. If you want to open up hotels and restaurants and spas and other workplaces, you have to stop the virus first. Throwing people into the burning bronze idol to their death ISN'T AN EFFECTIVE MITIGATION STRATEGY.
I wish these people were looking out for their bottom line. I WISH Trump was rationally assessing the risk to his business empire and coldly inhumanly taking the steps he needed to take to maximize his wealth. That would be horrific, but it would be vastly preferable to this.
To say "if we send people back onto the streets and into the stores the economy will recover" isn't public policy. It isn't even amoral capitalist calculation. it's magical thinking. It's Molochism.
Again, there is no theory of the virus in which we can just let a bunch of people die so the rest of us get go back to normal. Killing off the old and the sick to improve the lot of the rest isn't just obscenely immoral, it's incoherent.
