Join us for a virtual tour of the coast at Paull. Located on the outskirts of Hull, Paull is a coastal village with many interesting archaeological remains. Sam and Chris visited the area a few weeks ago. Follow this thread to see what we found. #Humberdiscovery #Archaeology
We started our walk on the north edge of Paull just above the foreshore, then headed North towards Hedon Haven.

In the past, the mouth leading on to the Humber gave access inland to the town of Hedon and the Haven Basin.

Within no time we had spotted some interesting archaeological features. Check out our @ThingLink to find out more- thinglink.com/scene/13021983…
This hulked vessel was one of the most obvious features in the landscape. The vessel is carvel built, with hull planking laid edge to edge.

This is one of several vessels that have been hulked to reinforce the banks of the haven. citizan.org.uk/interactive-co…
Paull retains many buildings associated with coastal navigation & safety. The most obvious is the old lighthouse. Built by Hull Trinity House in 1836, it was later replaced in 1870 by lights at Thorngumbald Clough and Salt End.

Paull is also home to a set of coastguard cottages and the site of an old shipyard to the south which you can see on historic OS maps.

Paull also had a pier but little of this remains. Do you have photos of the pier or the shipyard? #GetInvolved-

Built in the mid-19th century, Paull Point Battery was one of several coastal batteries constructed to defend the strategically important Humber Estuary. The fort was upgraded prior to the #WW1 and saw service during #WW2 as a submarine mining base- citizan.org.uk/interactive-co…
This is one of the two lighthouses that were built to replace the Paull lighthouse. The light at Thorgumbald Clough is mounted on rails so that it can be moved as the channels in the Humber changed over time.
