I know many hearts and minds across our country have been focused on the tragedy unfolding in Nova Scotia. We stand together with the people of that province in their time of grief.
This has also been a day when MPs returned to Parliament to debate and eventually decide on a mix of in-person and virtual sittings...
This is important because some of the most important next steps the government must take will be focused on the best timing and the best ways to get the Canadian economy going again, which, in turn, involves us resuming, if only partially, our lives pre-March
We at @angusreidorg released new data today revealing how Canadians are feeling about some of those questions, and #COVIDー19 in general. Follow along as I walk you through the findings.
Before I begin, you can read the whole report, and download data tables here: angusreid.org/covid19-return…
So to start, we're seeing the intensity and level of Canadian angst about individuals personally contracting #COVIDー19 begin to soften. Check out what's happening with the number who say they are "very" concerned: Image
The main driver of when it comes to personally falling ill now has less to do with people's own outcomes and more about infecting others around them: Image
So, against that backdrop, are Canadians ready for an immediate "return to normal"? The answer, overwhelmingly, is, "not yet!" Image
However, there are some parts and pockets of the population more inclined to say it's time to start lifting restrictions imposed to dampen the spread of #COVIDー19. Past @CPC_HQ and @BlocQuebecois voters, for example: #cdnpoli Image
Politics also plays a role in how much weight key arguments should carry in the debate over when to lift restrictions. We asked Canadians, if *they* were the policy makers, which way would they tilt? the graph below shows how they answered. #COVIDー19 Image
So, obviously, a strong tilt towards the public health side of the equation over the harm to the economy side. But it's really important to note a near plurality - 39% - said both factors should carry equal weight... #COVIDー19 #cdnpol
OK, hang on, I have to deal with a #WorkFromHome thing. Back in a few minutes.
I'm back! So, the big question to Canadians is if it's too soon to lift restrictions now, then when? Nearly half say that should happen sometime in the next month or two, while the next largest group would stretch that timeline as late as October: #COVIDー19 Image
Regionally, the prairies favour speeding all this up, Ontario and Atlantic Canada favour slowing it down: Image
Now, whenever those restrictions are lifted, how ready are Canadians to rejoin society and pick up their former lives? Very few say "immediately": Image
And when we think about all the things that have been shuttered and closed.. what should be re-opened first? I kind of love this answer, it's very Canadian: Image
One of the remarkable things about the #COVIDー19 crisis has been what appears to be a renewed trust and respect for institutions such as government and the media. We asked #cdns to weigh in on how each handled the pandemic risk: Image
Of course, not all parts of the country judge all the actors equally: #COVIDー19 Image
And political preference really, really, really skews views on how news organizations and @JustinTrudeau performed on this question: #COVIDー19 #cdnpoli Image
Overall, front line health workers, provincial politicians and provincial health officials are seen to have done the best jobs handling #COVIDー19, although majorities say federal actors are doing good jobs too: Image
And what about @JustinTrudeau himself? Well, assessments of the Prime Minister's handling of the crisis depends a lot on whether people voted for his @liberal_party in the last general election: Image
So that wraps up the main findings from @angusreidorg's most recent study as part of our continuing polling on #COVIDー19 crisis in Canada.

A reminder, you can read the whole report here angusreid.org/covid19-return….

More to come this week. Please stay safe and healthy everyone.
