Foreigners on Samui, who handed out rice to migrant workers, were asked by the police to apologize. Why? Is it because the workers weren’t wearing masks? Partly, but the main problem was that these “farang” then posted images on social media that damaged the image of Thailand.
The foreigners had good intention and so they should be applauded. Unfortunately, as the people were so obviously in dire need of food, they didn’t obey #SocialDistancing rules. For them, dying of hunger is more of an immediate threat than dying of #COVID19.
It’s not only foreigners who are getting into trouble with the law about handing out free food. In this clip that went viral, local officials in Nakhon Pathom confiscated all of the food from this Thai woman who was about to hand it out to hungry people #Thailand
I guess it’s understandable that authorities have stepped in to control the handing out of free food. You now need to contact them in advance and they will then help control crowds so it’s safe for everyone. But they also need to do things themselves to help the poor people.
In Phuket, which is in lockdown, the local authorities there are going around every single house and handing out free care packages. Has anyone seen anything like this elsewhere in #Thailand? It would be nice if local government were helping people in need in this way.
