"Although professional #healthworkers play crucial roles, in many countries trained members of the community play a vital role in delivering essential health services like vaccination, pre-natal screening & the detection, prevention & management of many diseases"-@DrTedros

"Today, WHO, @UNICEF and the @ifrc have published guidance for countries on how to maintain community-based health care in the context of #COVID19"-@DrTedros

"It includes practical recommendations for countries on sustaining essential services at the community level, leveraging community #healthworkers for the response to #COVID19 while keeping them safe & advice for how to adapt services for specific diseases & age groups"-@DrTedros

"For example, it suggests using telemedicine wherever possible, and leaving insecticide-treated nets for #malaria at the door of households, instead of asking people to collect them from a central location"-@DrTedros #COVID19

"It’s also vital that countries pay careful attention to the most vulnerable members of their societies.

Crises can exacerbate existing inequalities, which is demonstrated in higher rates of hospitalization & death among certain populations in many countries"-@DrTedros #COVID19

"We must address this now & in the long-term by prioritizing diagnosis & care for those who are most at risk.
This is not only the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. We cannot end the #COVID19 pandemic until we address the inequalities that are fueling it"-@DrTedros

"Today’s guidance complements the @UN framework for socio-economic response to #COVID19, published last week. The framework lays out a “recovery roadmap” for countries to:
-protect lives & livelihoods
-get businesses & economies up & running again as soon as possible"-@DrTedros

"Importantly, the framework takes a “health first” approach, recognizing that strong and resilient health systems must be the foundation of recovery in all countries"-@DrTedros #COVID19

"As more & more countries consider how to ease so-called lockdown restrictions, I want to reiterate the 6⃣ criteria that WHO recommends countries consider:

1⃣that surveillance is strong, #COVID19 cases are declining & transmission is controlled"-@DrTedros

"2⃣ that health system capacities are in place to detect, isolate, test and treat every #COVID19 case and trace every contact

3⃣ that outbreak risks are minimized in special settings like health facilities and nursing homes"-@DrTedros

"4⃣ that preventive measures are in place in workplaces, schools and other places where it’s essential for people to go

5⃣ that importation risks can be managed

6⃣ that communities are fully educated, engaged and empowered to adjust to the “new norm”"-@DrTedros #COVID19

"The risk of returning to lockdown remains very real if countries do not manage the transition extremely carefully"-@DrTedros #COVID19

"The #COVID19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of strong national and sub-national health systems as the foundation of global health security and universal health coverage"-@DrTedros
