Six principles of crisis communications from Sandman & @EIDGeek via @CIDRAP

1. Don’t over-reassure.
2. Proclaim uncertainty.
3. Validate emotions—your audience’s and your own.
4. Give people things to do.
5. Admit and apologize for errors.
6. Share dilemmas.
"Like most crises, the COVID-19 pandemic requires 3 kinds of risk communication. Before the crisis, the task is ‘precaution advocacy’ — warning a complacent public. We pretty much failed at that one."
"During the crisis, the task is ‘crisis communication’ - guiding a frightened public.

After the crisis or b/w waves of the crisis, the task is ‘outrage management’. That’s the one that’s on deck right now, officials face outraged criticism from all sides, much of it justified”
"It's not enough to know what needs to be said; you need to know how to say it. What Drs. Sandman and Lanard give us is a roadmap on how to take uncomfortable facts and share them with straight talk and honesty." -@mtosterholm cidrap.umn.edu/covid-19/covid…

⚠️"Equally off-putting were all those newspaper headlines along the lines of “Fear is spreading faster than the
virus itself”-as if that weren’t devoutly to be desired; as if the core societal failure in Feb & March had
been excessive alarm rather than excessive complacency."
"In the early days of this pandemic, officials did what they usually do. They told us the gov't had the
situation under control & there was nothing for us to do. People who stocked up on supplies were called hoarders. People who urged others to do so were called panic-mongers."
On dilemma-sharing for political leaders:

Don’t pretend or imagine that experts can resolve this dilemma for you.

Explain to your constituents how horrible your choices are.
