Good morning! ☕️ I'm Eleni, I'm British + Greek 🇬🇧🇬🇷, and I currently work for @esa for the #MarsExpress mission at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Spain! 🇪🇸🌌 This first thread is going to be a bit more about my background & how I got into the space field 😀🚀
I'll just start with a bit of a disclaimer that I'll be tweeting in a personal capacity this week, which means that although I'm happy to answer questions about @esa, the views I present are my own and not that of my employer! 🙂🚀 Right, onto my background:
My BSc study was in Geography 🌍 at the University of Sheffield @sheffieldgeog (with my 2nd year spent at @anuearthscience- shout out to Canberra! 🦘). You can hear a bit more about my start in #spacegeography in this video 📹
Whilst at ANU + Sheffield, I got the chance to study planetary science/geoscience, and wrote my thesis on the spatial & morphological relationships between Martian gullies and Recurring Slope Lineae (RSL). At the time, RSL were largely thought to be salty water streaks on Mars 💧
I then moved to @ucl to do an MSc in Planetary Science. My thesis here was on the automated detection of Martian caves using machine learning. Caves on Mars are particularly interesting, as they might be the most sheltered place to host existing, or evidence of extinct, life 🦠
Whilst completing my MSc, I applied for ESA's YGT programme (esa.int/About_Us/Caree… - I'll do a full thread on this & other ESA opportunities later this week). I was v happy to get the job! So in Sept 2018 I moved to Spain 🇪🇸 to start work at ESAC! 📡
For the past >year and a half, I have been working for the #MarsExpress mission at @esa, specifically for the Visual Monitoring Camera 📷 (@esamarswebcam). I am part of the Science Ground Segment team, which is responsible for science operations for the mission 🔴🛰️
Here is an interview I did last year for ESA about that work. Later today and this week, I'll go into more detail about both #MarsExpress and the specific duties of my job! 🔴🛰️ esa.int/About_Us/Caree…
Finally, I'll finish my job at ESA in Sept of this year. All being well, I'll then move to Hawai’i for a PhD at
@uhmanoa on Mars surface studies, where I will be working as a GRA involved with the Mastcam-Z instrument on the @NASAPersevere #Mars2020 rover 🔴 (image credit NASA)
So that's an introduction to me! tldr; I'm Eleni, I work for @esa in Spain 🇪🇸 on the #MarsExpress mission for @esamarswebcam, and I'll be tweeting this week about #MarsExpress, ESA opportunities, the work I do for @oewf & @SGAC_EHR, and Mars-related goodness! 😀🔴🛰️🚀
