Day 1: I use twitter @melaniejward to keep up with space news and advertise events I run, but still am still relatively new to the twitter game. I'll start the the week with this about me thread that can double as a highlight for some amazing space happenings in Australia!
One of the aforementioned events happens to be coming up, a #women in #engineering highlight in honour of #WomensHistoryMonth. As young professionals officer for @aiaa I've been arranging this panel for two months, and very excited to be moderating this Thursday. #WomenInSTEM
Been passionate about space since I was a kid, even went to #spacecamp at the Challenger Learning Center. This is where I met Dr Sally Ride, she was the second grown up (the first being my mum) that encouraged my dream not to go to #space but instead to support those who do.
Not every student wants to go to space. I wanted to be in the control room at @NASA encouraging those who did make the journey, and provide them with the best support. This desire to help others is what lead me to be so involved with #STEM #outreach outside of my studies.
There are a lot of amazing STEM outreach initiatives in Australia to take part in like @AusYouthAero, this Feb was my last month serving at state level for AYAA. They run events like a rocketry comp and provide networking opportunities. Go check them out, get involved locally!
Currently I am on the @aiaa Adelaide Professionals section council, with others who share my passion for STEM outreach. I do my part by assisting organising free public events like the panel above & investigate ways to support aerospace initiatives in #schools across #Australia
You don't have to be an engineer or someone studying engineering to join @AIAA. Anyone can join! Its worth noting that if you are an K-12 educator, its no cost to join thanks to free educator membership. Check out the link for more info➡️aiaa.org/membership/typ… #teachertwitter
I'm Australian but grew up in the states, (so I sound American), came back just 3 years before the @AusSpaceAgency established itself right in my home state. Its been so cool seeing the Australian space community grow and our space agency's staff are doing some amazing work.
I was introduced to @isu_shssp a few years ago at @UniversitySA through an event featuring astronaut Yi So-yeon. Follow @isu_shssp for fun events in #Adelaide yearly! I graduated from @isu_shssp this year, learned about it two years before thanks to their public outreach!
I'll talk more about the Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program (@isu_shssp) another day and share some of the highlights from that program. I graduated last month and was able to attend thanks to a scholarship and am grateful for the investment made in my future!
I was introduced to space and modern archaeology @Flinders by @drspacejunk. I couldn't really conceptualise or was aware what someone could do with social sciences in space & the community until got to know her work. Alice is amazing & inspires me as I move forward in my studies.
@Flinders has a fantastic student culture that fosters an environment for students study at their own pace. Through club involvement I discover ways to help others and grow community. I don't know where I'll end up in space, but happy to leave the world a better place on the way.
I hope you've enjoyed my first twitter thread. Let me know if you have any questions for me. I have some questions for you all! What are some clubs or associations you've joined to foster your space journey? How do you take part in or support STEM outreach in your local area?
I'm looking forward to sharing some advice for uni students this week learned from my experience networking in South Australia, information about outreach groups and stories from across SA. This is the end of my intro thread, looking forward to spending the week with you all!
