Today's #MuseumsUnlocked topic is so interesting to me that I like to share an entire thread, instead of few tweets.
In all the territories of their Empire, #Romans built cities that always share common features and monuments: one of the most recognizable was the #Amphitheatre
Let's start our trip to the Romans amphitheatres from the Capital. The Flavian Amphitheatre, alias the #Colosseum (72-80 AD), is still the most iconic monument of #Rome. It could hold 50-80.000 people, assisting a variety of public spectacles, even sea battle! #MuseumsUnlocked
Also the already mentioned #Aquileia used to have its own amphitheatre, built in the I cent AD. Preserved only in remains, it was identified in the XIX cent. by E. Maionica and is currently under investigation by @UniVerona: looking forward for new discoveries! #MuseumsUnlocked
From the II cent AD also #Cagliari, in the beautiful #Sardinia, has its own amphitheatre. It was half carved in the rock and could host up to 8,000 people. It was abandoned in the V AD, when gladiator fights were banned, and then it was exploited as a free quarry #Museumsunlocked
From the sea to the mountains, here you are the amphitheatre of #CividateCamuno. After the conquest of the #ValleCamonica, the #Romans started shaping in their own way the former main settlement, building this amphitheatre that can be still visited (even at night!) #MuseumsUnlocked
Among the secrets of #Lucca, there is also its #Amphitheatre. Built in the II AD... it is still in use! From the VI AD the Roman structures were transformed first into fortifications and then in houses and warehouses. Today it's the most beautiful city's square! #MuseumsUnlocked
Being (at some point) one of the Capital of the #RomanEmpire, also #Milano has (obviously!) its own amphitheatre. Built in the I AD it was destroyed when the city was sacked by the Goths in 539 AD. Its ruins are now preserved within the Antiquarium, "Alda Levi" #MuseumsUnlocked
Speaking about amphitheatres, #DYK that the one in @pompeii_sites is the earliest one in stone?Built in 70 BC near one of the city gate, to facilitate the access of the 20.000 spectators coming also from nearby towns. Perfectly preserved, even #PinkFloyd loved it #Museumsunlocked
The Flavian amphitheatre in #Pozzuoli is the third largest Roman amphitheater in Italy. Built in the I AD to host up to 50.000 people, its undergrounds are still perfectly preserved and wandering within galleries and vaults is really fascinating(orange sketch by @GiorgioPandiani)
In #Croatia, the #Pula arena still entirely preserves all 3 Roman architectural orders. Completed in I AD, it was built outside the walls, along the road heading to Aquileia, on a slope; it's the reason why one side has three stories and the other only two. #MuseumsUnlocked
These are only few of the Amphitheatres built by the #Romans all over their Empire. Imposing and majestic monuments, most of them are still important landmarks in nowdays city and town. Looking forward to visit all of them (maybe starting from today's #MuseumsUnlocked itinerary!)
