BTW, I called Grasberg a base metal (copper) mine below; Poulgrain repeatedly calls it a gold mine. It is both -- on value it has been about 60:40 copper:gold over the 30-year life of the open pit (1990-2019; mining has now moved underground).
Reported total open pit production was 12.2 million tonnes of copper and 47 million ounces of gold. At approximate 30-year average prices, those were worth US$60 billion for the copper and US$40 billion for the gold -- about US$100 billion all up.

That's (Douglas Adams' mice voice) 'a lot of moneeeey', but hardly an Earth-shattering amount …and note that development turned out to be so challenging that the thing wouldn't have shown a profit until the end of the century, by when Allen Dulles had been dead for 30 years.

#DidYouKnow: The Western Hemlock #loopermoth is a native species to our region. Increases in their population are part of a natural cycle that happens every 11-15 years. We are in the third year of an outbreak, after which their numbers are expected to naturally decline. (1/5)
You may see more browning and damaged trees on the #NorthShore as #loopermoth larvae eat conifer needles, especially western hemlock. These outbreaks are part of the ecosystem – dead trees fall down and become nutrients on the forest floor, allowing new trees to grow (2/5)
#naturelovers may appreciate that while the current #loopermoth outbreak may be disruptive, it's a vital part of the #ecosystem. Loopers are food for birds, bats, frogs, mice and more. Before breaking down, dead trees become new habitats for owls, woodpeckers and squirrels. (3/5)

In the #LongFoodMovement report, we're reminded that the world’s 30 million artisanal #fishers and workers provide nearly half of the #fish we eat (@IPBES, 2019).

But with #climatechange & island/ocean grabbing, small-scale fishers & their communities are in peril.

🧵Thread 👇🏾
Island/#ocean grabbing is likely to intensify as countries seek to solidify their influence, their #food supply chains, & their global sourcing and distribution networks. For example, in the #RedSea region, conflicts over fish & other marine resources threaten rich #biodiversity.
Meanwhile, in the South China Sea, said to
have some of the highest marine #biodiversity on earth, #China has been building airstrips, ports & other facilities on disputed islands & reefs, w/ the apparent aim of establishing military bases (cf. Ives,
2016).

Remember when nobody could find toilet paper? The pandemic changed supply and demand, shocking supply chains.

And it wasn't just toilet paper... [A THREAD 1/6] Seafood restaurant signs on Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
Think of all the foods you would normally only eat if you were at a restaurant.

Suppliers suddenly had no one to sell them to. [2/6] A lineup of colorful seafood on a picnic table.
Let's talk about oysters. 🦪 Demand for restaurant-quality oysters fell 90%... but nobody told the oysters that! They continued to grow at local oyster farms.
And grow.
And grow.
Until they were oversized for the restaurant market. [3/6] A hand holds a large oyster.

(2/6) "In 1941, a black cat shipped out from Pennsylvania on a daring mission to undermine Nazi Germany. Named Captain Midnight, he was sent to Britain...to be flown across Europe in an RAF bomber until he eventually crossed the path of Adolph Hitler, and thereby cursed him."
(3/6) "Captain Midnight was transported in a red, white, & blue crate...and his departure was big news, the story carried by newspapers around the country. So, you ask, how can we know if he succeeded? In response, let me ask you, how did things turn out for Mr. Hitler?"
