Day 2 #Gambia v #Myanmar #ICJ begins, w/#ASSK up first. She declares #genocide is a crime, applied by #ICTR to #Rwanda but not to #Kosovo or #Croatia by #ICTY or #ICJ, because of a lack of dolus specialis.
Gambia has put fwd 'Incomplete & misleading factual picture'. Situation in #Rahkine is 'complex & not easy to fathom'. (same rhetoric as we have heard for years)
Complexities go back for yrs. Claims conflict btwn Arakan Army w/5000 fighters & the #Myanmar Army, w/Arakan Army seeking independence. The conflict has led to displacement & security measures such as curfew & checkpoints, applied to all regardless of background.

Ok folks - Day 2 of the #ICJ #Gambia v #Myanmar provisional measures hearings going to start - important as no submissions yet by Myanmar so, first formal indication of their legal strategy. [I’ll be away on an interview for a bit so hoping we have other “live tweeters”?? :)]
Agent of Myanmar: #ASSK takes the floor as minister for foreign affairs (is this the first time an agent doesn’t have a legal background); #genocide convention “wholeheartedly” signed by Myanmar; not applied to Kosovo or exodus of Serb population from Croatia. No Specific intent
Incorrect factual situation presented to court; though suffering of innocent people. #Rakhine state background - internal armed conflict; Arakan army seeks independence; displacement & conflict, affecting civilians

It is extremely disturbing to read about the the current state secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of #Croatia, Zdravka Bušić taking part in #terrorist training and posing with fascist insignia in USA during the 1970s.

zurnal.info/novost/22572/p…
The photos of Zdravka Bušić and her friend Mercedes Škegro posing with guns and #Croat fascist insignia were taken by journalist Nikola Majstrović.

In 1977, he was tasked to make a documentary featuring Croat emigrants in USA, titled "The #Croats: Terrorists or Freedom Fighters"
During the 1970s, Zdravka Bušić was a member of the Croatian National Resistance (HNO), a fascist #Ustaša organization founded by Maks Luburić, a Croat fascist who headed the system of concentration camps in the Independent State of #Croatia (NDH) during much of the WWII.

Thread: Let's watch night turn into day with some dawn views of the Peristyle; the monumental heart of Diocletian's retirement palace at Split, Croatia - completed in 305 AD. The Peristyle is undoubtedly one of the world's finest surviving examples of Roman palatial architecture.
The Peristyle was the central monumental court of Diocletian's palace-fortress, constructed for the Emperor's retirement to his Dalmatian homeland and where he lived out his final years; the only emperor to peacefully and permanently abdicate the position.
A grand tetrastyle facade and porch (prothyron) dominates the courtyard, acting as a gateway between the public and private sectors of the palace, leading to the southern residential wing and the Emperor's private apartments.

Thread: The Temple of Jupiter inside Diocletian's Palace, Split. Constructed around 300 AD and dedicated to Emperor Diocletian's "divine father", the supreme Roman god Jupiter. The temple was converted into a baptistery in the 7th century. #roman #architecture #croatia
The temple entrance retains its intricately carved marble cornice. Amongst the decorative motifs of leaves, tendrils and flowers are carved images of Roman gods such as Sol, Victoria, Apollo, Triton and Hercules.

Thread: The Mausoleum of Diocletian, constructed during the Emperor’s lifetime to house his remains after death; strategically placed at the heart of his palace-fortress in Split, Croatia, c.305 AD. #Roman #archaeology #architecture #Croatia
The first emperor to voluntarily abdicate the throne, Diocletian enjoyed a short but peaceful retirement at his purpose-built palace where he famously tended to his vegetable gardens. He died in 311 and was laid to rest in an elaborate porphyry sarcophagus in his great mausoleum.
The Emperor's remains were desecrated during invasions of the 7th century and his sarcophagus destroyed. Ironically, considering Diocletian's Christian persecutions, his mausoleum was consecrated as a Cathedral in 653; with an exquisite Romanesque style bell tower added in 1100.

#Panel discussion on "What is the new normal for #CESEE?"
@wiiw_news #wiiwSpringSeminar
Vizek: "Very strong public sector, lot of informal economy. Croatia experienced slow growth before, so new normal not really new. But political willingness to reform very low."
Zubovic: positive trends in #Serbia: - rapid #growth in #IT sector over last 3/4 years w/ 3% to 6% share of GDP - Huge Chinese #investments, but with #externalities - Macroeconomic #stability, no fiscal #deficit anymore - foreign #debt declining - Substantial growth of #GDP

Vice President of #Serbia’s National Assembly mocks the death of Hatidža Mehemdović, one of the world renowned “Mothers of Srebrenica” (as well as the murder of her sons & husband during the genocide). Would that her views were rare in @avucic’s Serbia. rs.n1info.com/a406608/Vesti/…
This woman is a leading figure in the far-right, ultra-nationalist Radicals, still headed by a convicted war criminal, & @avucic’s mentor. Vucic claims to have “changed” his views but he’s never explained how or why in detail & routinely negates SRB’s role in BiH War.
That the EU establishment has fallen all over itself to rehabilitate Vucic & his increasingly autocratic regime only makes this more frightening. He’s consolidating power, cozying up to power, letting the lunatic fringe run loose again. We’ve seen this film before.

Shocking assault on academic freedom & freedom of speech at the University of #Zagreb. @CepoDario & his colleagues are jewels in Croatian academia, and the relevant authorities cannot allow far-right extremists to target them in this fashion. cc @Dunja_Mijatovic
Background: A. Petričušić, M. Čehulić & @CepoDario are doing important research on the growth & intersections of far-right social movements in #Croatia, the Church, veteran’s groups & the ruling HDZ. Same reactionaries now pressuring @SveUZgbu to “discipline” these academics.
An alarming & disturbing assault on basic academic freedoms in an EU & NATO state. If these extremists succeed in punishing free inquiry it will have profound chilling effect on free thought in #Croatia but throughout the #Balkans. It cannot stand. More soon; follow @CepoDario.

With increased interest in #Croatia due to #WorldCup success, here's a short history lesson about the place:

A Slavic tribe named Croatians came to the area of modern-day Croatia in the 7th century, then promply began having sex with everything that moved for the next 200 years.
Some scientists suggest the word 'Croatian' means 'friend', which, with all the Netflix & chill going on, sounds just about right. Anyway, after 200 years of bow chicka wow wow with anything with a pulse, a modern-day nation of Croatia was born.
Croatia wasn't huge on offensive wars, and if you ever went to the place, you'd know why. Advisers to the king were like, yo, dude, we have one of the most powerful countries in Medieval Europe, and there are bunch of little ones around us to invade. How 'bout Duklja?

So, just another reminder that as of yesterday we have documents showing clearly that #Croatia's HDZ intends to directly interfere in the Bosnian elxns to elect @Dragan_Covic & is so doing w support from Russia. zurnal.info/novost/21262/h…
When it was finally "revealed" that Russia & Serbia spent yrs meddling in Macedonian politics it was kind of a big deal. Happening in front of our noses in #Bosnia & it's basically being shrugged off. Good thing BiH is only like 10x more volatile than MK. occrp.org/en/spooksandsp…
Well-respected observers & academics in region have been writing about HDZ/Russia link for the better part of two yrs for such obscure outlets as Radio Free Europe. We now have docs & credible accounts of meetings w FSB proxies. Where's the alarm?! slobodnaevropa.org/a/hdz-bih-dodi…

Bosnian media claim former FSB director Nikolai Pattushev met w HDZ officials from #Croatia & #Bosnia in Trogir resort to coordinate strategies for interfering in BiH elxns, ensuring @Dragan_Covic’s victory & solidifying RUS influence in both states. zurnal.info/novost/21260/p…
If @zurnal_info has the docs & sources to back this up, it’d be the clearest link yet between the hard-right of the HDZ in #Bosnia & #Croatia & the Kremlin. Their on RUS in BiH reporting so far has been excellent, recall this scoop: theguardian.com/world/2018/feb…
I note also that this story meshes very closely w the approach Russia took in #Montenegro in the 2016 coup attempt, as detailed in this thorough report by @ReufBajrovic, @VeskoGarcevic & R. Kraemer for @FPRI.
