[Thread] 1/ In the UK aggressive online attacks on the press and journalists continue following the #DominicCummings scandal. The "scum media" hashtag seems to be escalating. This thread is an analysis of around 28000 interactions/tweets on Twitter from around 9013 accounts. 
2/ The majority of these tweets are from the 28th May. I will discuss who is being targeted most. @piersmorgan has dropped from top spot. @bbclaurak @maitlis @KayBurley @BethRigby suggest a misogynistic flavour to the abuse this evening. Some of you may be wondering why Boris
3/Johnson's name appears there. That's because people are sending him messages of support while criticising the media. Apparently these people fail to recognize the Johnson is also a journalist and member of the media. #notmovingon
4/ This graph shows the amount of inbound tweets containing the word 'scum'. You can see that @bbclaurak @KayBurley @piersmorgan @maitlis @PippaCrerar @BethRigby have received hundreds of tweets in the past day. Kuensberg has received around 888, while Maitlis 561 (see bar chart
5/ As we have seen, biographical analysis of the accounts suggest most engaging in this abuse are pro-Brexit and pro-Trump. Approx 1 thousand of the accounts have either 'brexit' or 'brexiteer' in the biography. Around 300 have either Trump or MAGA #notgoingaway
6/ The top five accounts tweeting and retweeting the scum hashtags are > @timmyvoe @petermac7 @1hannebelle @chrisgregson123 @pam30301 @karenlondon9930 From profiles again generally right-wing accounts. One even with a banner saying "The Media is the Virus". #notgoingaway
7/There's some strange stuff going on to. If you look at the network graph, I've zoomed into an orange blob orbiting the main cloud. This is strange because they seem to be quite an insular Right wing cluster. In the next tweet i'll provide some screenshots of them #notgoingaway
8/ A bunch of these accounts are retweeting the below tweets about US channels. The account in question has just about every conspiracy theory hashtag going, also Cult 45 :/
9/ I think one of the most striking things is how this issue, which initially seemed directed as a distraction to try and criticise journalists jostling outside Cummings' house, has just turned into a general attack on the media. None of those being attacked were outside his
10/ house. @maitlis - for example, is simply getting abuse for her segment on newsnight which apparently makes some people think it's ok to call her mediascum. The scale of this attack is really quite disturbing. It's as if Dominic Cummings has his own online army...
11/ Anyway, I'll finish this by showing you these graphs again. From @tnewtondunn and @piersmorgan, to @PippaCrerar @KayBurley and @maitlis - British journalists across the political spectrum are being harassed with literally hundreds of tweets an hour. This is not ok! -Fin
