FYI Bull City: A #DefundThePolice #DurhamBeyondPolicing protest planned in downtown #Durham tonight at 6 p.m.
Also, I just learned about a 1 pm protest at 1 pm at Los Primos.
I'm in downtown #Durham waiting for the #DefundThePolice protest at 6 pm. Some businesses are boarding up their windows.
Protesters are starting to gather at the CCB Plaza and at the Carolina Theatre for 6 pm protest in downtown #Durham.
Crowd is growing outside the Carolina Theatre. At this point the crowd includes families with kids.
I ask BYP organizer what she expected. She said she expected it to be "lit"
When I asked if she expected any violence, she said: I don't know what to expect. We are in wild times. #Durham
Jalon Redmond of #Durham says he expects a peaceful protest tonight. "Everyone wants the same thing. For everyone to receive the same justice."
I would say the there are about 500 people (and growing) now at the downtown #Durham protest.
Julian Ali also expects tonight to peaceful. "We are in #Durham. Nobody is reckless."
Protest is starting with #BlackLivesMatter chant.
Organizer Datra Jackson says "cops, COVID-19 is killing black people in this country" and thanked everyone for taking the risk to be here.
Part of the crowd just surrounded some people who were preaching and chased him away.
Police were kind of blocking off West Morgan but they just left after crowd left street.

Durham activist Muffin Hudson said $100,000 has been raised for the Durham bail fund. She's asking people to participate in Durham rolling jail protests on Friday.
Hudson said the only way to prevent future police killings is to "abolish the police."
"We have to defund the police because it is state sanctioned killings," Hudson said.
Huson said they need to take the police budget and give it to teachers and a community wellness task force.
"We can govern ourselves.We don't need police," Hudson said. "Police are nothing but agitators."
Hudson said black people need their white allies, but those allies need to sit back and let black people lead.

After six hours of protests in #Durham, one window was broken around midnight as a handful of protesters remain downtown.
And it appears all the protesters have left, and it's just us journalists.

To be clear, most of the damage occurred hours after BYP100 organizers had stepped away from leading the march and around the same time as a handful of remaining protesters dispersed.
