Yesterday, we released an important episode "Introduction to Health Inequities" w/ Dr. Utibe Essien @UREssien

Today, we share the episode's handout made by Dr. Moses Murdock @haematognomist including referenced landmark texts in health disparities & other anti-racism readings👇
As Dr. Essien @UREssien discusses in the episode, the COVID-19 pandemic "opened our eyes and laid bare structural inequities that exist in our society"

Ex-Obama CMS lead @ASlavitt began describing these racial disparities here:

We wanted to further highlight @UREssien's voice, alongside other African American physicians @uche_blackstock & @EarlCampbellMD, who discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic intersects with structural health disparities across America in this @CNBCMakeIt video:

Ibram X. Kendi @DrIbram writes in "The American Nightmare":

"This is the racial pandemic within the viral pandemic—older than 1896, but as new as COVID-19 and the murder of George Floyd."

We also want to highlight @harvardmed student & class president @LashNolen who penned this impactful piece "We Can't Breathe", urging us to support Black medical students in this time & always, much as we would any hypoxic patient in the hospital:

@LashNolen also put out this exposing tweetorial on systemic racism & bias in medical school teaching of physical exam signs w/ an emphasis on dermatology

We urge you to take a look & think about how you can speak out against "classic findings" in #MedEd

@UREssien gives us actionable steps that we can take to help combat racism in medicine & in society:

Short-term:
1⃣Listen
2⃣Educate yourself
3⃣Advocate
4⃣Show patients you care

Long-term:
5⃣Push leaders
6⃣Promote minority leaders
7⃣Diversify the workforce
8⃣Write in support
@UREssien: "We need to think about how we can thoughtfully use this moment to change the systems that we’re in. And, for us, change our health system”

He teaches us to use the tools we learn in medical school to really listen, knowing that many people are hurting & internalizing
➡️Educating yourself with books that aren't necessarily medical books:

1. "How to be an Antiracist" by Ibram X. Kendi @DrIbram

2. "White Fragility" by @RobinDiAngelo

3. "Killing the Black Body" by @DorothyERoberts

4. "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander @thenewjimcrow
@UREssien urges medical schools across the country to put out support: "as physicians, our voice is so powerful"

"knowing that this moment is not a political moment, but it's a human moment"

Dr. Kimberly Manning @gradydoctor Dept. of Med response:
(brief interruption as a reminder to go follow Dr. Manning @gradydoctor ASAP; her stories are personal and her writing is impeccable)

Two recent threads of hers that are as moving as they are heartfelt:

Lastly, @UREssien tells us that when seeing patients:

"See how folks are doing. Responding in a way that's meaningful and honest to you is something that is really special"

This is how Dr. Essien responded to his own medical team:
In closing, @NavinKumarMD's call to action:

"Let’s take the lessons shared by Dr. Essien and go make a positive difference in our communities in any way we can. Let’s be the leaders that society expects of us. Not just today, not just tomorrow, not just next week, but all days.”
