Not a rocket science. Plain and simple. Source unknown.
Do not encroach natural way of #rivers. Go for river flood zoning. Here land use planning is done according to the potential of a river for flooding. Prohibited zone and Regulated zone are demarcated. Infra development is done according to risk assessment floods can cause.
- In prohibited zone no infra is created.
- in regulated zone infra like playground, parks etc can be created, which needs less intervention. Can be vacated immediately.
- no habitation in flood zones.
Deforestation on hills can create can increase flood zone;
- increase in erosion
- further siltation of river
- reduce in capacity
- overflow of river leading to floods
- siltation of lakes, & overflow of lakes around habitation
A river takes its form over a large area, through hills & forest. The activity in its source region not only decides channel dynamics but also discharge. The impact of it can be noticed in lower regions. This one is a river taking shape from small gullies. A project I took.
Same happens when wetlands are encroaged, or rivers are encroached. The buffer which was available during floods get destroyed. And all leads to urban flooding also. Apart from loss of biodiversity.

See examples of big cities you will know.
