1. Back in February I repeatedly raised concerns about immunity to #COVID19

In March, when the UK government started discussing herd immunity I wondered what the government’s scientific advisers were thinking. Immunity to coronaviruses is temporary at best.
2. This isn’t new information, it’s established science. We know human coronaviruses (HCoVs) reinfect regularly. This was recently confirmed by the team at Columbia University who found short interval reinfection was more common than expected.

3. We know immunity to SARS and MERS is temporary. We know there have been questions about immunity to #SARSCoV2

4. There are more and more reports of people struggling with long term symptoms of COVID19 infection.

6. Other studies have come to similar conclusions, which is why I see no reason to doubt this most recent pre-print.
7. Some scientists equate infectiousness with harmfulness. They believe since the virus can’t be cultured from long-term or reinfected patients, it can’t be causing the repeat or continued symptoms.
8. Ebola enters a state of low replication persistence in privilege immune sites and causes inflammatory responses even after the virus has ostensibly cleared the body.

10. Governments are taking significant risks allowing the spread of this virus without fully understanding how it behaves and what it does. @devisridhar is right to ask why not get rid of it altogether?
11. The only argument against eradication has always been an economic one. That’s why air travel wasn’t stopped in January and lockdowns weren’t introduced in February. Certain governments believed they could ignore the problem and protect their economies.
12. With one of the worst mortality rates in the world and one of the most damaged economies, the UK is a case study in the folly of such thinking.

13. If we can’t develop long-term immunity to #SARSCoV2 and a significant proportion of people suffer long-term consequences of infection, the economic cost will be high. Not to mention the toll in human misery.
14. I urge policy makers not to make assumptions about immunity when formulating policy. Scientists need more time to develop a better understanding. And I would like to see more emphasis on providing support for long-term #COVID19 patients.

1. It's been frustrating to witness events unfold entirely as some predicted. My heart goes out to all those who've lost loved ones in the #COVID19 pandemic & those who are still suffering with illness.
2. In this March 2nd piece I warned a lethal pandemic was inevitable, the illness would not be mild, immunity would be uncertain, and if we didn't act quickly we'd be trapped with a high infection rate and a broken economy.

3. We've made all the wrong choices and ended up exactly where I'd feared. So what now? It's clear some governments have given up. Lockdown is too hard. Test, track, isolate is too hard. The economic pain is too severe. They plan to let the virus run through their populations.

1. A number of people have responded to this thread by saying, "What's the point? They just won't prosecute."

That might be true, but any decision taken improperly or for political reasons would itself be subject to scrutiny.

2. On the 27th April, I wrote a letter to my local Chief Constable. I could have chosen any one of a number of senior figures involved in the government's pandemic response, but I complained about Sir Patrick Vallance, because his statements on herd immunity were so stark.
3. I wasn't expecting much. Most likely a polite brush off. But I felt it important to make the complaint and have it recorded. The Chief Constable took the matter seriously and has assigned a detective to investigate the complaint.

Misconduct in public office is an offence at common law triable only on indictment. It carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

2. It is an offence confined to those who are public office holders and is committed when the office holder acts (or fails to act) in a way that constitutes a breach of the duties of that office.
3. The offence is committed when:

a public officer acting as such;
wilfully neglects to perform his duty and/or wilfully misconducts himself;
to such a degree as to amount to an abuse of the public's trust in the office holder; without reasonable excuse or justification.
