While appreciating the concern of the @LagosMoj over the assist & clarification, it is imperative to state the circumstances that led to the charge lest we assume an appeal is being made for an armed robber. Context is key & we know how derelict the criminal justice system is.
In 2014, SARS were the Boko Haram of the time empowered by the state running amok above the Law. Chidozie like most impertinent youth have decided to remain in the Abati, Vulcanizer, Akowonjo neighborhood of Lagos State, even after his parents moved somewhere else.
On the fateful day, He went to his best friend’s (Prosper) house to charge his laptop. Prosper’s mother is a tenant to a certain Akeem, who was later discovered to be an armed robber. Suffice to say, Prosper lives with his mother in a rented house owned by an Armed robber.
Days before a Himan Rights Lawyer reported an armed robbery incident which led to the theft of his car at Gun point after he was subdued via threats to life amidst aggravated assault. His car was later found in the possession of Abass who is a known mechanic in the neighborhood.
The SARS operative caught up with Abass who further implicated himself as the owner of the vehicle given to him by Akeem to probably sell. While prosecuting the case they came to Akeem’s house and raided every man there. This was how Akeem, Precious and Chidozie were arrested.
Before that day neither Chidozie nor Akeem have met each other, let alone knowing each other. In the usual practice of SARS the suspects were detained, tortured & denied of representation. Chidozie was shot in the leg in the bid to persuade him to confess to the crime.
Suffice to say that the statements of Chidozie and Precious being used in the courts were coerced while they were struggling to survive under intense daily torture. The Officers knew Precious & Chidozie were not armed robbers but as a culture no suspect walks free with SARS.
Chidozie’s laptop were perused after no success was made in pinning armed robbery on him. Eventually they claimed he was a YahooBoy which he (Chidozie) accepted as a lesser sin & tried to get bail. They demanded that he submits his ATM card & other valuables and he agreed.
They emptied his account and took all his valuables. When Chidozie asked when he can make bail, they said he should look for N5,000,000 (Five Million Naira) and ger a guarantor. There was no way Chidozie or Precious could get N500k let alone N5M so they were charged to court.
This was 2014. It was the community that finally arranged a Lawyer for Chidozie, Precious and Abass (the mechanic and accessory to armed robbery). So the case was registered as a groupie which worsened the fate of both Chidozie and Precious. The only time the case was visisted..
...to any reasonable degree was in 2015 where the victim testified that he never saw Chidozie or Precious while being assaulted & robbed of his Car. All through 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020 they were brought to court only to hear the adjournment. This was how 6years got flushed.
Right now, we only want to appeal to separate Chidozie and Precious from the representation of Abass and file for them separately. Imagine how easy it is to lose your freedom in Nigeria as a youth. This was why @SIAF_NG kicked off #EndSARS #ReformPoliceNG campaign in 2017.
Many youth today don’t know what they were saved from. Though we are not out of the woods yet but we are no longer in those dark days. This is just one case out of thousands. If you look at the number of awaiting trial inmates, you’ll discover they cover 80% of all detainees.
We will talk more later today. But kindly join me this morning on @ARISEtv by 9am.
We later gathered that Akeem was sentenced to Death (Condemned) by another court which complicated the armed robbery case he was charged along with Abass, Chidozie and Precious for. Our court process demands that all suspects appear before the case can be heard.
Don’t get me started about the incapacitated lawyer. My approach to law is way different from the way our religious lawyer perfunctorily engage. We have a lot of work to do in this country which is why I’m interested in the next leadership of the @NigBarAssoc. #EndImpunity
How can we live in a populated State with only 16 Criminal Jusges and thousands of pending cases?! How can one blame these over worked judges dealing with lawyers that feed on adjournments? This can not continue under our watch. @BAjibadeSAN @OlumideAkpata @SIAF_NG 😡
For the very first time I’m tweeting in tears based on the poor and unconscionable response of the MOJ of my state to a critical matter such as this. It appears they ni linger see this as new even with Lagos having the highest number of inmates in Nigeria awaiting trial. 😞
We say very little not because we don’t know much but simply because we apply diplomacy in expressing our dismay about what the system have become and worst of all what public officers are working towards bequeathing to our children. This is why we’re forced to act.

End of Rant
