BREAKING: Alberta Medical Association votes overwhelmingly that they have no confidence in Minister of Health Tyler Shandro. #ableg
Dr. Christine Molnar says the province needs to pay attention to this, and it reflects how they feel contract negotiations have not been done in good faith.
When asked about this potential vote, Premier Jason Kenney said there would be no chance that he tells Minister Shandro to resign.
With questions, @Jantafrench asks what they hope to achieve with this vote. Dr. Molnar says this shows the unity of doctors within the AMA. Adds it sends a message that things are not working right now.
My question sort of piggybacks on Janet's question on what this vote will result in. Dr. Molnar acknowledges this is not legally binding, but it is just a clear statement about their lack of faith in the Minister. Their relationship with the government has never been this low.
Another question on what the goal is here. Dr. Molnar says she is writing a letter to the premier and asking for a meeting, hopefully they can calmly discuss the state of affairs and how to move forward.
.@JenLeeCBC on how the government's response may change here. Dr. Molnar says doctors have seen their role and views diminished by Shandro. Hopes the premier can acknowledge that he is part of the problem, at least.
Dr. Molnar worries the health care system is under threat, and ultimately their members are liable for the care being offered. "This is a very grave situation for everyone," and it was not created by the doctors.
If you don't get the response you want, then what? Dr. Molnar says they have limited options as they cannot strike, for example. This is why she says physicians need to be treated fairly and have little other recourse apart from these sorts of votes.
Also the AMA is still continuing with a lawsuit against the government about Shandro walking away from contract negotiations before their agreement was torn up.
Dr. Molnar says they have never even seen this type of response on contract negotiation votes. Shows the passion here and importance of the question. This vote was only done over the course of one week. "Clearly and unequivocally quantify how our members are feeling."
She adds that she doesn't want to speculate here, but the government has to acknowledge that their policies do not reflect the wishes of Albertans.
That's an end to the press conference and there will be some more details about the vote coming in a press release.
