1] Location of Welsh language schools in areas of Wales
2] Huge historic lack of Welsh language schools
3] Lack of other Welsh language schools in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Areas: especially Tiger Bay [see point two] or areas where Black communities live
4] Perceived higher/more intense levels of racism at Welsh language schools
5] Unconscious bias from staff members
6] Fears of bullying owing to lack of BAME pupils and BAME staff in Welsh language schools
7] Fear of institutional racism/unconscious/conscious bias from teachers
7] Amplified fears and concerns about being able to help e.g. your child with Welsh lang homework: in Cardiff where #Black community is largest, 8.9% of the population is Welsh language speaking and 20% are BAME. Highest BAME pop in Wales, amongst the lowest for welsh lang
8] School to prison pipeline emerging in Wales, potentially higher rates of exclusion at Welsh language schools that may not be seen to be culturally competent with Black children
9] Fewer Black children than white children attend #Welsh language schools: imagine this pattern continues e.g. less Black people than non-BAME people learning Welsh language, accessibility of courses, nature of curriculum, classroom and school culture, type of teachers etc
9.1.] A lack of data on race and Welsh language b/c of perception "Welsh language is for everyone" without nuances of lived experiences for Black communities
9.2] Inadequacy of data on race and Welsh language being collated [I could have a field day with this, but not here]
10] Anglocentric data collection means have both robbed Welsh POC of identifying as Black Welsh+e.g. Asian Welsh, but also inadequacy around self-definition of Welsh language- no way to cross reference data around e.g. fluency of Welsh lang amongst different ethnic+racial groups
11] Lack of information on community cohesion, race, identity, ethnicity in faith in education studies on/of Welsh language
12] Cost [Cymraeg i Oedolion]
13] Location [Cymraeg i Oedolion]
14] Curriculum, diversity of curriculim [Cymraeg i Oedolion]
15] Failure of institution of Cymraeg i Oedolion overall as a group- what if I told you Cymraeg i Oedolion was never meant to work? It's, more or less, in my opinion, an industrial complex. Something's gone wrong with the programme. [Again, a field day, but can't do it here!]
16] Class- various reports state that BAME groups receive less of a median wage than non-BAME people, with Black African communities receiving some of the lowest median wage. Class and Welsh language is a huge thing that is quite taboo in Welsh society
16.1] Politics of race, class, sex and gender in what jobs do and don't offer continued professional development in supporting people to e.g. go to Welsh lang class. Wonder what that breakdown is of CPD and Welsh lang classes around race
16.2] Class- no Welsh lang primary schools in working class areas in non-Cymraeg speaking areas. Almost impossible for some families to spend £15.00 a week on a bus pass to take small children to school.
What to do about it
1] Hire Black researchers to work on this area
2] Better pipeline progression for BAME teachers in Welsh lang schools
3] Implementation of recommendations from the @theredcardwales report
4] Hire BAME researchers to work on this area
5] Curriculum overhaul
6] MA's and PhDs in universities across Wales 2retain talent in Wales/Welsh talent on topics relating to critical race theory
7] Creation and distribution of research + documentation on topics; Welsh lang, racism in Welsh schools etc
8] Campaign around self-definition+Welsh Lang
9] Overhaul of CiO programme across Wales including SWOT analysis and outcomes of KPI's, data on drop-outs, subsidies etc made public
10] Better regulation by e.g. ESTYN on diversity in schools
Probably more, to be honest, but it's eleven o'clock, and I'm a bit tired.

Veteran community activist, Lee Jasper, released this blog last night. We have gotten a lot of this information from Lee's blog, and we are so grateful for his work on this. [2]
Mohamud Mohammed Hassan was arrested at his home on 08/01/2020 8th January 2020 at 11 pm and was forcibly taken to Cardiff Bay Police station. [We are paraphrasing Lee Jasper's words]. [3]
Our lives as welsh language speaking of colour differ hugely from the lives of non-POC who speak Welsh and and people of colour who don’t speak Welsh. A thread. 1/
There is an idea that only white people speak Welsh. This is plainly untrue. Many people of colour speak Welsh, and according to historian @Seimon_Brooks_, around 10% of #Cardiff docklands spoke Welsh during the heyday of shipping in South Cardiff 2/
On a theoretical level, these conversations are emblematic of the insider and outsider dynamic. Who is an “outsider” to the Welsh language? Who is an insider? What hierarchies, if any, emerge, and how are they exploited? 3/
#DidYouKnow that #Wales🏴 is home to the oldest continuous #Black community in #Britain🇬🇧? From now until the end of #BlackHistoryMonth, we are going to be sharing facts+information about #Black heritage in #Wales to highlight hidden histories
Check out this website from @TigerBayWorld called "the Heritage and Cultural Exchange Archive". There is a wealth of resources including #OralHistory 🗣️, photographs and documents 2/
Not all #Black history in Wales🏴 beings+ends with #TigerBay: far from it. John Ystumllyn was an 18th-century Welsh gardener+1st first well-recorded black person of North Wales. He was stolen from Africa and brought to Wales. Here is a portrait of him as a teenager in 1754 3/
Even if a BAME woman is elected, the Senedd is not fit for purpose. 1 BAME woman won't change the dynamic of the Senedd. If the Senedd had never elected a Welsh language speaking white man, there would be uproar: and its legitimacy would be questioned: so why not 4 race+ gender?
What we have seen is a culmination of 20 years of ignoring discussions on "diversity" [who is "diverse"+ who isn't given location of Senedd in #Butetown, Wales 2nd most racially diverse ward?]. We have seen conversations on gender that resulted in gender shortlists w/o BAME women
Yes, of course it's important for politicians 2 reflect the communities they serve- but what do we do w/ the democratic gap and institutions that normalised a lack of 'diversity' in politics along w/ institutional racism? Who or what groups can benefit from that gap?

A controversial housing development has been given the green light🚦by Cardiff Council despite huge widespread opposition, two committee members failing to show up...yet the development on the site of Track 2000 will be going ahead 1/
Grangetown is the most multiracial part of Wales. Gentrification has made Grangetown and especially south and north Grangetown an attractive area as rent prices rise in #Cardiff, often pushing out Grangetownians who can't afford to live there any more 2/
We need a real radical grassroots campaign against gentrification to secure the longterm health of Cardiff, and to make sure that gentrification doesn't act as a form of colonisation [along with the attitude to esp young BAME people] from/by middle classes 3/
