#3121album
3121 had Rock, contemporary R&B, classic 80’s Funk & Electro but for me it was the Latin influences that surprised me & really made this album standout.

Those influences were more pervasive on this record than any other I can think of.

So for me 3121 was his “LATIN ERA”!
Te Amo Corazón (TAC) - the first single released on 12/13 (3121 in reverse) 2005 was saturated in Latin influence.

It was re-released again in an ill conceived attempt to to capture the Valentines Day market on 14 February 2006.

open.spotify.com/track/13Imdyyb…
TAC is one of my fave songs from 3121, it’s gorgeous, romantic & seductive.

It’s definitely a summer holiday record with a Tropical Island vibe but a cool one at that.

IMHO - P made a bit of a blunder by releasing it in the Winter months because it’s a Summer holiday record.
A Summer release might have generated greater airplay on the radio & music channels.

It could’ve soundtracked the Summer of 2006 for holidaymakers around the world.

The Winter Chart positions were good in Canada (7), Italy (7) & Spain (2) - just imagine them in the Summer!
TAC sounds sexy, sensuous & is seductive- definitely the kind of song you would give to someone you love or are attracted to.

The guitar & piano interplay is sublime, the vocals are heartfelt, the strings are sensational - all underpinned by the blissful Bossa Nova riddims.
It contains a gorgeous chord progression - Gm7, F6, Cm7, Bbmaj7, A7, Cm7 to the classic Hendrix chord D7#9 followed by a🔥D7 Arpeggio.

It has an understated bluesy guitar solo - the effects make it sound underwater (like the 3121 track) & it compliments the song’s Island vibes.
A lot of hardcore fans are divided on their thoughts, some love it, some hate it. Sequencing might play a part.

4 me it was an interesting new direction which I would loved to have heard him further explore.

P was now 47 & so musically this song was reflecting his maturity.
A Prince first - A Bossa Nova record!

It’s a unique sound on 3121 as it would be on any other P album.

Given his wide embrace of different music genres & his well known love for Latin women, it’s astounding it took almost 30 years to get to his first fully fledged Latin track.
TAC was the sort of experimentation he spoiled us with in the 80’s & then again in the early 00’s with TRC, NEWS & C-Note.

After these experimentations, he had nothing to lose & it would have been interesting to hear him do more fully fledged Latin tunes in different genres.
It is not known if TAC was recorded at Paisley Park or at his 3121 residence but what is known is that he flew to Panama to record the percussion overdubs & to shoot a movie & perhaps also to do some sight-seeing 👀.

The track credits the following musicians:👇
So a collaborative band effort.

Mr & Mrs Dunham handled the rhythm section.

Prior to working with Prince, between them they had worked with names like Yusef Lateef, Donald Byrd, Joe Sample, Lalah Hathaway & Patti LaBelle, amongst others.

@iamQueenCora
@Dunham_Josh
So P went to Panama ...uh 👀...instead of the home of Bossa Nova - Brazil for the percussive Bossa Nova vibes!

But why? - more on this later.

The following were credited for percussion:

*Ricky Salas - timbales, bongo & percussion

*Herbert Ureña - congas, bongo & percussion
Not much is known about @RickySalas01

@herberturena is from a Latin Grammy nominated Panamanian band Afrodisiaco who create music that fuses the black & rural cultures of Panama with contemporary influences - a musical narration of the journey of the first Africans of the
Americas & how ‘that first drumming’ they brought with them evolved into different musical currents & genres.

And of course the Master @clare_fischer was on call for the string arrangements.

Here’s what some of the reviews said about it:

@Housequake @pitchfork @RollingStone
So TAC is rooted in the Latin Jazz/Bossa Nova style but where did this influence come from?

P may have soaked in some of the chill-out/lounge/cocktail Jazz explosion occurring in late 90’s/early 00’s by lifestyle branded compilations - Cafe Del Mar, Buddha Bar & Hotel Costes.
Also in early 2000’s, a New Wave of Bossa Nova was ushered in by the likes of Suba, Bebel Gilberto, Nouvelle Vague & Nicola Conte’s Jet Sounds & many of these artists appeared on these compilations.

TAC complimented these kinds of sounds which were really in vogue at the time.
When I heard TAC in 2006, it felt to me as though Prince was trying to channel some of the New Wave & traditional Bossa Nova vibes

Check out my playlist containing some of the New Wave of Bossa Nova sounds of that time:

These lifestyle compilation brands were very popular & shifting heavy sales numbers & sometimes they were outselling established artists.

What also united them was that the compilations provided a soundtrack/sound-design for the venues which were high end & exclusive.
These venues were where the jet set, rich & famous & supermodels hung out. They were uber trendy & cool.

Perhaps the 3121 residence was inspired by this music-venue lifestyle model where P created his own sound design & hosted exclusive celebrity parties.

👂👇 @DJRASHIDA
Like the Buddha Bar & Hôtel Costes, 3121 was an exclusive destination venue - a beautiful, extravagant & opulent setting for celebrity parties.

As you can see by the way he decked out his 3121 residence, it could easily have been mistaken for one of these venues.
It is historical fact that Prince had frequented Hotel Costes - he held a press conference there a few years after the 3121 release.

So this might provide some evidence of the inspiration venues like this had on 3121 branding & music during this period.

3121 is P creating a lifestyle brand.

He had a high end venue, a celebrity clientele, a sound design, a DJ & a 3121 perfume.

He had plans for 3121 mag which became a newsletter/website to promote his brand & music.

@samjennings

Read about it here: shorturl.at/jtvY6
Latin music wasn’t new to P, he had songs with a Latin inflection.

SOTT Tour - he would regularly play “Soul Salsa” by @SheilaEdrummer.

So Sheila E was an obvious influence with a grounding in Latin music.

Playlist👇of P’s Latin influenced tunes.

open.spotify.com/playlist/7Il74…
Plus there were other Latin influenced tracks (not available on Spotify) such as Apollonia 6’s “In a Spanish Villa” which had Apollonia speaking in Spanish over a searing Santanaesque guitar solo & with the ocean providing an ambiance.

@ApolloniaKotero
Ofc, it was also well known that he was a huge fan of the music of Gloria Estefan & Santana.

Not strictly Latin but kinda Latin Rock, here’s a must hear blistering Prince performance of the infamous Santana Medley live at Glam Slam in 1994:

The 3121 Radio Show was a concept developed by Prince & @DJRASHIDA

In 2005 they recorded a two-and-a-half hour demo episode intended to be aired by @SIRIUSXM but talks stalled & it never aired in the end.

However, in May 2020 it finally aired on the Prince Channel - SiriusXM.
The 3121 Radio Show featured Latin tunes by the likes of The Spanish Harlem Orchestra & Fania All Stars which ties in with P’s Latin explorations during this period.

You can catch many of the tunes of the 3121 Radio Show here:

So Prince was immersing himself in more Latin sounds during the 3121 era.

Not only was he incorporating it into the songs on the record, TAC, The Dance, & Get On The Boat but he was also taking frequent trips to Latin countries like Panama & working with more Latin musicians.
In 2007 his part-time backing band was a Latin Funk powerhouse from Austin - @grupofantasma

P heard their amazing low budget live album & was so taken by it that he started working with them.

Listen to this album & you’ll understand why - It’s 🔥🔥🔥!

As a live band Grupo F were a perfect tight Funky fit &
had a residency at P’s 3121 Club & they did one-off gigs:

Golden Globes, Super Bowl pre-party, American Latino Music Awards, Indigo & Coachella.

On occasion Prince guested at their gigs.

@adrianmquesada
@PrinceVault
During 3121 @IndigO2 they performed at an Aftershow with a heavy Latin setlist.

They covered tracks by Panamanian 👀 artist ‘El General’ - a pioneer of ‘Reggaeton’ which crossed over with Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” in 04’ & again recently with Bad Bunny, J Balvin & Rosalia.
Interestingly El General turned his back on music & became a devout Jehova Witness and now regularly travels to Panama to evangelize.

“The lyrics [of my songs] caused conflict with my conscience” - ring any bells!

Grupo F covered this monster anthem:
They also did Cuban Trova songs by Compay Segundo, Salsa songs by Willie Colon, one by Santana & a few Grupo F songs.

P joins the band mid-gig on Maceo’s ‘Soul Power 74’.

The Latin tracks from the set list are compiled here 4 your listening pleasure

At the same Aftershow Grupo F did a cover of a huge Salsa anthem by Willie Colon & Hector Lavoe - “La Murga de Panama”.

Just 1 of many P references to Panama during the 3121 era.

Bootlegs exist & can be found of the whole show. Here’s the audio of 1:

In 2008 P premiered & performed the unreleased song “Turn Me Loose” on the Tonight Show with Grupo Fantasma’s horn section.

But it is not known whether they also appeared on the recorded studio version.

Here’s a 🔥horn heavy Latin funk workout of Chelsea Rogers👇

Providing an insight into why P found them so appealing as they were phenomenal, superb live musicians with perfect Purple Funk traits.

Imagine a P & Grupo F album - A missed opportunity! 🔥
Ofc Renato Neto was an integral part of Prince’s band in the early 00’s during ONA & on/off through to 2011.

Renato is from Brazil, the birth place of Bossa Nova & maybe he had an influence on Prince going in this direction albeit strangely he doesn’t feature on this song.
An influence since the 70’s was @clare_fischer (CF) who provided the majestic string overdubs on TAC.

CF’s strings are just so masterful & beautiful. They ooze class & elevate the track into another dimension.

More CF here:

CF’s strings sound like 50’s & 60’s Hollywood Technicolour (think Gentleman Prefer Blondes & The Graduate).

CF also had a history in Latin Jazz & Bossa Nova sounds which he ventured further into in the 60’s with musicians like Bud Shanks, Joe Pass & Cal Tjader.
CF also formed a band with Latino musicians - Salsa Picante who paved a pivotal role for him.

His most famous work was Bossa Nova influenced with albums like “Bossa Nova Jazz Samba” & “Brasamba”.

Check out CF’s Bossa Nova creations in this playlist:

open.spotify.com/playlist/19QAs…
Of course CF’s main influences were the masters of the genre Jobim, Getz & Gilberto who set the precedent for Bossa Nova.

“Getz & Gilberto” is one of my all time favourite Bossa Nova albums, an absolute classic that has soundtracked many summers for me.

open.spotify.com/album/3JvFflPI…
CF’s son, @brentfischer_ spoke to @8minutesidle about P’s Latin influences:

‘We had heard him do funky things like “Te Amo Corazón” before. Even wilder things. I would venture to guess that some of the very unusual things that we’ve heard Prince come up with recently are due
to the influence that CF’s writing has had on him. We were sort of supposing that Prince would eventually get more involved with [Latin jazz] ...”

Now this part got me:

“....I believe also at that time he had a Latin girlfriend, so that may have been part of it....”
So moving onto to that Latin GF - TAC is ‘rumoured’ to be about @LizaHernandez23 aka Liza Lena.

Liza appears on the 3121 album as 'guest per4mer'.

Liza is likely to be the voice on “Lolita”, backing vox on The Dance & the “Panamama" P refers to in “Get On The Boat”
I know yesterday @darlingnisi suggested that (upon good authority) she might also be the subject matter of Lolita but I didn’t consider this as she was around 25/26 years of age at the time. Kinda old to be a Lolita!

But who knows? Who cares lol 😂

Liza is a model/actress from guess where .. 👀 yep Panama who starred in the "A Million Days" video in 2004

It has been said that Liza had a very close relationship with Prince (I bet), perhaps something more than a friendship.

In the gossip mill - Bria Valente broke them up.
P also has an unreleased song called “Streets of (guess where, yep, bang!) 👀 Panama” which TAC replaced on 3121.

So P had quite a fixation with Panama during this period - maybe due 2 his obsession with curvy mamacita Liza.

P also registered domain names in her name.
P recorded the percussion overdubs in Panama but why did he not go to the home of Bossa Nova - Brazil?

‘Maybe’ it was a perfect foil to go to Panama to see Liza whilst still married!

The 3121 movie was supposedly built around her.

She’s in the leaked trailer!
It’s been rumoured but never confirmed that P might even have written an album for her & possibly this track too - “Panamaniac”!

It doesn’t really sound anything like him at all & so I’m highly doubtful.

But apparently he financed the video.

Upon his passing, Liza said the following via her instagram:

"I can't explain the sadness that my heart feels for a person that I loved very much and that definitely influenced my life a lot. I have many beautiful memories of you. I love you to death”.

Her IG posts below 👇
So lets look at the lyrics👇of the song to see how it might tie into this rumour.

42,000 ft above the sea - what could that be?

The average commercial passenger jet aircraft cruises at an altitude between 30,000 & 42,000 feet (ft).
Is he talking about meeting someone on an ✈️.

Perhaps he met Liza on a flight somewhere in 2004 & that’s how she came to appear in the Million Days video.

I wonder if they ever joined the Mile High Club.

It might explain his trips to Panama in 05’, “Streets of Panama”, the
reference to her in “GOTB” & his fascination with all things Panamanian - music, artists & country.

The next line is kinda revealing as he’s talking about doing something forbidden:

Dust of the Earth & Knowledge Tree!

Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth.
The Tree of Knowledge is one of two specific trees in the Garden of Eden. It is the only plant from which the human is forbidden to eat.

It is known as the Tree of the Knowledge of good and evil (Gen 2:9).
But what is this knowledge of good and evil that has been deemed off-limits to humanity?

One common interpretation is that eating from the fruit of this tree represents the beginning of sexual desire.

It ties into the story of Adam & Eve & the apple from the forbidden tree.
Prince was still married to Manuela at the time & so maybe it’s a reference to infidelity/sexual desire which of course would be a forbidden act for a Jehova’s Witness within the confines of a marriage which is meant to symbolise monogamy.
The rest of the lyrics obviously take in how much of a profound impact this love interest (Liza?) has had upon him.

The usual case when you are mad crushing in the early throes of a relationship & especially when you have a strong lustful attraction to a curvy Latina mamacita!
He is also talking about being changed by the experience.

About how his depression (brown eyes blue) has been replaced with happiness & how he wants to thank her for bringing about these changes.

Nothing too deep or hidden but just a lovely & simple expression of his feelings
For some, the lyrics might be quite romantic & sweet but for others 🤮

Bill Adler of Rolling Stone once asked Prince if his music was autobiographical.

Prince responded by saying:

“Everything about my music is.”...
And so is TAC autobiographical ... who knows.

The inside sleeve of 3121 contains a series of photos of the different spaces within the 3121 property.

I’ve always viewed the images as reppin’ the themes of the songs.

I’m covering TAC & The Dance & so I won’t spoil the others.
TAC - The heart mirror in the centre might signify matters of the heart being the central focus.

1 single sofa might signify a longing for intimacy.

2 vases at either side of sofa might signify a coupling.

Overall this space might signify love, balance & a meeting of minds!
TAC Video

The video was directed by one of Prince’s besties @salmahayek (From Dusk Till Dawn & Valentina’s mommy).

The video stays faithful to the single except it starts with some bells ringing.

It’s a cool & stylish video but nothing much happens.

Salma conceived the ideas behind the video & TAC was the first video she ever directed!

She decided to shoot it in a riad in Marrakech, Morocco.

You can learn more about that whole process here:
Here also is a press conference P did with the actress in the video - Mia Maestro - in which he is asked about the video, the Spanish influence of the song & the Universal agreement:

On working with her, P said:

"Salma is the most considerate & caring of all the directors I have worked with,".

Salma on P:

“It was very special. He was so, so supportive of me.......he was really relaxed. He didn’t even realize it was work. A lovely, lovely memory.”
In 2017 Salma appeared on a British programme “Graham Norton Show” & she appeared alongside Comedian David Walliams & One Direction’s Liam Payne.

Hear her speak about Prince’s hilarious advice to her:

“Sista’ stay away from the Buffet”
If you’re interested in Morocco, hearing sounds & reading about places to frequent, I did a great compilation in 2007 with an extensive travel booklet.

The compilation contains loads of exclusives of the then contemporary Moroccan music scene.

amazon.co.uk/Experience-Mor…
It also includes the original song sampled by the Chemical Brother’s in “Galvanise” - the sample use was unauthorised but cleared post release.

I stand in good company here because only 2 people have ever obtained a legit license for the song - Author/Composer Paul Bowles & Me!
BRITS 2006

In February 2006 Prince appeared at the Brits accompanied by the Dunhams, Twins, Tamar, Sheila E, Morris Hayes & DJ Rashida.

He was also reunited with Wendy & Lisa for the first time since the mid 80’s.
P was playing his Hohner Madcat guitar & opened with TAC.

He performed an alternative arrangement of the song with additional (& better) guitar solos.

Live - it didn’t match the brilliant studio version.

The Mediterranean-ish Sea visuals complimented the vibe of the song
He was playing his ‘original’ Hohner Madcat guitar at the Brits.

He has a few Madcat guitars, 1 original & some back ups. You can distinguish them by a backward ‘Z’ appearing on the pickguard of the original.

The first 2 images below are of the original & the 3rd is a copy.
He was in Morrocan type threads which he must have purchased in the souks whilst in Marrakech for the video shoot.

The Live audio & video version was released as a B side to the Fury single.

The medley he performed was received with positive reviews.
Lisa on the experience:

“Prince had been in touch with Wendy a little during that time and he asked us both if we would come play at the Brits with him. We hung out a couple of times and had dinner. We jammed... just the three of us. It was a blast!
Then Sheila came and a few of us played around with Te Amo... we were just in his living room with a guitar and piano... congas? And it was really nice. So, yes, we worked out a little arrangement together”.
From @8minutesidle’s book:

‘had a really good time rehearsing for it ... at his house....(Wendy thought) ...The three of us are going to announce this, do that,’

When they got there Prince didn’t speak one word to the two of them.
Lisa says:

‘It was like he went, “Psyche!”’

Wendy added:

‘When we performed “Purple Rain”, he had Támar up to sing, & then The Twinz, & me & Lisa, & we had no screen time, it meant nothing.

He wouldn’t let us talk to the press to announce that we were going 2 be there”.
Piano & Microphone 2016

TAC was performed occasionally during shows in 2006 & 2007.

It was last performed at the second show of The Piano And A Microphone Gala Event on 21st January.
TAC was sandwiched in between The Dance & A Million Days.

If you recall Liza starred in the Million Days video & TAC was rumoured to be about her!

Strange how he did 2 songs back to back reputedly connected to the same person!
He performed a simply gorgeous rendition of TAC but it only lasted for about a minute.

The performance was preceded by a short speech which I will elaborate upon in my thread next week - The Dance - as it’s really poignant.
One observation, the piano part immediately following TAC really sounds surprisingly like “Roxanne” by The Police.

You can hear TAC at about 33 minutes in here:

mixcloud.com/bassie_from_ho…
Overall, I have to admit this album was a bit disappointing ‘in real time’.

At first, even TAC grated on me.

I found 3121 & Black Sweat as the most interesting - he was pushing the envelope again.

But initially the rest didn’t live up to the promise of those tracks.
However, over time, I began to appreciate this album more & gave it the time it deserved.

TAC started sounding far superior as the years went by & it grew stronger as a track. This might have had something to do with my own maturity.
So what this actually reinforces is that, if you give it the time, P’s discography continues to surprise.

The impact, rather than diminishing - increases.

So for those of you who may have written off 3121, give it another try with fresher ears, it might just surprise you.
Hope you enjoyed this journey thru P’s “Latin Era”.

P was all about opening minds & he wanted his fam base to explore all kinds of music.

Get into P’s zone by listening to other musical genres from other parts of the world that he promoted.

Try to hear what he heard.
So that’s a wrap!
