Erwin Schrödinger (1887-1961) has become a household name and part of our common intellectual culture not least because of his famous 1935 thought experiment questioning the #Copenhagen interpretation of #quantum_mechanics 1/
This is a good explanation of the thought experiment and the cat who is and isn’t 3/
Incidentally tangentially this reminds me of Michael Frayn’s Copenhagen that i saw when it came out in 1998 3a/
And we have known about his interest in philosophy - and in fact much of the vogue for physics and philosophy owes much to his work link.springer.com/chapter/10.100… 4/
What is perhaps less well known is his association with Carl Jung (1875-1961) and the Eranos circle, which he attended in 1946 5/
His paper was published in the first collection of Eranos papers edited by Joseph Campbell under the theme of Spirit and Nature 6/
His article the ‘Spirit of Science’ demonstrates his holistic approach to culture and inquiry at once historical and philosophical but rooted in a vision of physics 7/
His notion of scientific inquiry as a set of games recalls #Wittgenstein approach to language 8/
There is perhaps also a commonality of opening a space beyond the material and even engaging the mystical - for example this quotation 9/
I shall not keep free of metaphysics, nor even of mysticism; they play a role in all. We living beings all belong to one another, we are all actually members or aspects of a single Being, which we may... call God, while in the Upanishads it is called Brahman 10/
Which sounds at the very least like a form of pantheism (panpsychist even) or articulates mystical unity 11/
What is perhaps most interesting about #Eranos was the coming together of the world of #philosophy #science and #art with an emphasis on the esoteric and the symbolic in a way that is rare to find in our compartmentalised academic concerns 12/
