#EidGhadir is widely celebrated not just by #Twelver but also #Ismaili and #Zaydi #Shia - the impact on the arts is also considerable 1/
Extensively in painting (and let’s not even bother with the so called prohibitions on figuration) such as classic illustrations on manuscripts and #Farschian 2/
But one of the best ways in which the actual words of the event are memorialised and enacted is the #qawwali in #Hindustani culture #من_کنت_مولاه_فهذا_علی_مولاه 3/
The standard account is that the #qawl as the basis for #qawwali began with Amir Khusraw (1253-1325) the musician and disciple of Nizamuddin Awliya (1238/1325) - here depicted in a #Mughal painting 4/
Most qawwali performances begin with the qawl in different styles qalbana tarana and evening khayal 5/
This is one of the best recent performers Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948-1997) 6/
A version that I quite like is by Abida Parveen 7/
another version that I came across recently is Ustad Bahauddin Khan (1934-2006) 8/
And then we have the classic one by the Sabri Brothers (Gholam Fareed 1930-1994 and Maqbool Ahmed 1945-2011) 9/
Fareed Ayaz - another récent popular one 10/
Of course they are more popular #filmi examples from India that take the qawwali out of its devotional context as well as those that exoticise it as the #Muslim #other 11/
But what this brief thread indicates it that #EidGhadir is more than an event, a commemoration or a festival - it is a culture that has created and continues to inspire #art 12/
